I'm looking for a way for the device to remember what orientation the user has selected previously:

E.g. If the user selects portrait on their phone then next time they load the app on their phone it will open to the portrait home screen. I know the SaveData function requires a collection so maybe I can save a global variable to the cache instead so that I can code on start screen: IF( Landscape,true etc)?

Any help would be appreciated cheers.

Hi @R45,

When storing user settings, I most often create an additional List/Table to store those user settings in. When the user changes the settings for the first time, a records is saved to the column. When no record exists for that user, the default settings are used. When a record exists and the user updates their settings, the record is updated.

Checking the user settings can be done during the App OnStart and e.g. saved to a variable.

Thanks for your response! I have tried implementing this by creating a table called Test which contains the users full name and preferred orientation. There are columns for name and Landscape which I've tested with data e.g. Name ="John Smith" and Landscape = "F".

If(
!IsBlank(LookUp(Test, Name = User().FullName && 'Landscape' = "F")), 'Hours Input Portrait')

Any clue to why this code isn't working (there are no errors)?

Hi @R45,

The OnStart property will need a Navigate() function, not just the screen name. Now generally it is best practice to write the code in the App.StartScreen - in which your current code should work (no navigate function). Did you try the code in the StartScreen property?

The code will navigate to the portrait screen if the LookUp is not blank, otherwise it will navigate the user to the first screen in your Tree View.

Should the StartScreen property not work, make sure a row exists in your table with those exact values. (double check capitalization, spelling of the Name column in comparison to User().Fullname...)

Initially I was testing the code only in the start screen property where the code below worked fine:

 User().FullName = "Test Name", 'Hours Input Portrait')

I therefore continued testing using the lookup which ofc didn't work. I have now included the code in the onstart and start screen and it works great. 

OnStart: Set(Landscape, true);
If(
!IsBlank(LookUp(Test, Name = User().FullName && 'Landscape' = "F")), 'Hours Input Portrait')

StartScreen: If(
!IsBlank(LookUp(Test, Name = User().FullName && 'Landscape' = "F")), 'Hours Input Portrait')
