Selecting the last submitted record (from an edit form) in a gallery based on a filtered collection

I have an app with an edit form connected to a SharePoint list that creates / edits events. The list of events is displayed in a gallery. I want users to be able to filter the events in the gallery, see details about a selected event (by reusing the form in view mode) and then select one or multiple events they want to register for. I have created a collection representing my SharePoint list which is filtered by dropdown. The gallery displays the resulting filtered collection and contains checkboxes so the user can choose events.  

I am struggling to understand how to do something very simple. When the form submits and creates a new event (or edits one), I want the gallery (which is displaying a collection based on the datasource and not the datasource itself) to update with the new event (rebuild the collection) and crucially, display that new event as the one selected.

I have tried setting the Form OnSuccess property to recreate the collection and then set a variable to match the last submitted record, but to no avail. I'm new to all this, so probably missing something really obvious.

What you can do for sure is the following:

ClearCollect(LastEdit, **Patch statement here**)

This will execute the Patch statement and then return the edited object and store it in the collection LastEdit. You can then use First(LastEdit).ColumnName to access its fields. You could also make it a context variable using UpdateContext function as well. 

Form.OnSuccess -> UpdateContext({LastItem: FormName.LastSubmit})

@mmollet I really appreciate your reply.  Honestly, I'm not getting it. How does this help me to select the new record in the gallery? 

I am using a variable to connect the selected record in the gallery with the record in the datasource:

Gallery1 OnSelect > Set(varRecord, LookUp(SharePointList, ID = Gallery1.Selected.ID));

The gallery displays a collection representing filtered results from the data source.

Gallery 1 Items > Sort(Sort(colGalData,StartTime,SortOrder.Ascending),StartTime>=Today(),SortOrder.Descending)

Another variable represents Gallery1 Default > varGalDefault

The Form OnSuccess property now says the below, but it's still not working the way I want because when I save the form, the gallery selects the first record and not the one I just submitted:

UpdateContext({LastItem: EventForm.LastSubmit}); //variable stores the last submitted record
Select(btnLoadData); //redraws the collection for the gallery
Set(varGalDefault, LookUp(colGalData, ID = LastItem.ID)); //sets the gallery Default property to the record in the collection matching the last submitted record
ViewForm(EventForm); //sets the form back to view mode

Background: I have a form on one side of a canvas app that stores events in a SharePoint list. I have a gallery on the other side that displays a collection representing the events in that SharePoint list (instead of displaying the list directly).  The behaviour I want is that when a record is submitted using a form, that same record is then selected in an updated collection in a gallery.

As per the PM you sent - I will try to simplify this - note that gbl instead of var is simply my protocol for global variables instead of context variables.
