SharePoint Dropdown autopopulate SharePoint text field

Okay.....

I have a SharePoint choice field called Manager.  I have a SharePoint text field called Manager Email.

Manager                                Dropdown field (sharePoint choice field)

Manager Email                      Single text field (sharepoint text field)

SOCC list                               reference list that has Manager and Manager Email .......

In powerapps, the user selects a value in the Manager dropdown and it is supposed to autopopulate the Manager Email text field.

i put this code in the Manager Email Default property:

Lookup(SOCC_list, 'Manager' = 'Manager'.Value, 'Manager Email' )

this code seems to work in the canvas.... but after i publish the form, and try and select a value from the Manager dropdown field, the Manager Email field does not populate.  I think i have the code on the wrong property because i would expect it to autopopulate as soon as i select the value.

i am close but.........

Thanks @cnorris135 ,

Firstly naming controls so close to the field name can be a little confusing for you at times, however if

The DropDown CBRE_Manager  has the Items

Choices[@'SOCC Forms'].CBRE_X0020_Manager

(note square brackets - I assume you mis-typed these) then the output from this control has to be

CBRE_Manager.Selected.Value

I noticed quotes around this earlier 'CBRE_Manager' - you do not need these.
To test this, type in CBRE_Manager.Selected. (note second dot) and see what valid values come up underneath.

Hi @cnorris135 ,

Your approach is almost there. On the OnChange of the Manager Drop-down, put

Reset('Manager Email')

if this is the name of the Text Input (not the Field), otherwise use your Control Name.

okay i tried that......

on the Manager dropdown, i put OnChange = Reset(DataCardValue9)

*the Datacard name is  =

Manager_DataCard1

    StarVisible9
  • ErrorMessage9
  • DataCardValue9
  • DataCardKey9

saved>published and tried switching names, and it just wont fire.  Does it take awhile for these things to kick in when you publish the updates?

Thanks @cnorris135 ,

I should look at a whole post before adding the bit missing. You are looking up a field with itself.

Lookup(SOCC_list, 'Manager' = 'Manager'.Value, 'Manager Email' )

You need to Lookup the value that has been selected in the drop-down and refer to the control. You did not give me the name of this - I will use ddManager - change to your name

Lookup(
   SOCC_list,
   Manager = ddManager.Selected.Value,     //See Note
   'Manager Email'
)

Also .Value is only applicable for Choice and Lookup fields. If this a Distinct filter, it will be .Result otherwise will be .Manager if formed from this field.

Use the Reset as you are doing now.

Another way is this on the OnChange of ddManager (I have used .Manager in this one)

UpdateCOntext(
   {vMMail:
      Lookup(
         SOCC_list,
         Manager = ddManager.Selected.Manager,
         'Manager Email'
      )
   }
);
Reset(DataCardValue9)

The Default of DataCardValue9 is then

vMMail

Yep, the problem is with dropdown value not selected properly. I was testing with same sample columns and @WarrenBelz comes out with a pretty detail answer. Man he is quick 🙂 Posting my test anyways.

okay im going to provide to pics..... i believe i did everything correctly as you guys have listed.  I really appreciate your help in this in advance.

**point..... when i added my code to the text field, it DID populate with the already existing email of the existing dropdown value.  BUT....... my point is when i tried to change the value of the dropdown, it did NOT change the value of the Manager email.  Its not firing.  thats why im including also these pictures because i think im close.

Thanks @cnorris135 ,
Firstly, you need to reference the drop-down name selected value - is 'CBRE_Manager' the name of the Field or the drop-down?

If it is the drop-down, you need (if not use the drop-down name)

Lookup(
   CBRE_Manager_SOCC_list,
   'Manager Contract' = 'CBRE_Manager'.Selected.Value
).'Manager Email'

NOTE .Value may be different depending on the Items of the drop-down - .Result for a Distinct filter or .FieldName (actual name)

Also are you resetting the other field on the OnChange of the drop-down?

Hi @cnorris135 ,

I totally agree with @WarrenBelz 's last post. The issue is from 'CBRE_Manager'.Value code, it can't get the combo box selection correctly.

You have to modify 'CBRE_Manager'.Value code to ComboboxName.Selected.Value as suggested.

Please have a try to see if it makes sense for your case. If so, please mark his post as the solution.

Hope this helps.

Sik

hi sir.... and thank you all for responses...

Your code:

LookUp(CBRE_Manager_SOCC_list, 'Manager Contract' = CBRE_Manager'.Selected.Value).'Manager Email'

my code

LookUp(CBRE_Manager_SOCC_list, 'Manager Contract' = 'CBRE_Manager'.Value, 'Manager Email').

i switched (copied) your code and it is throwing this error:

Thanks @cnorris135 ,

This is not a difficult concept to solve, but I cannot see your data or control names.

Firstly, can you please confirm the name of the drop-down you are referencing and what the Items property of this control is.

Your code is valid, but it is looking up a list, which has not had the value saved to it yet.
