Simple Canvas App with one SharePoint List Data Source Connection New/Edit Form Hanging on "Getting Your Data"

I created a SharePoint list on our corporate internet SharePoint site.  I am designated as a a site owner with full rights to the corporate SharePoint intranet and all associated lists, libraries, pages, etc. for that intranet.

Next, I open Power Apps and select create a canvas app from blank.

01 - New canvas app from scratch.png

Power Apps generates the blank canvas app and opens it for design.

02 - Building and opening canvas app.png

I add SharePoint as a connection under my Office 365 email/account, and then select the corporate SharePoint internet primary page.  For simplicity, I then only connect to ONE SharePoint list created within the corporate SharePoint intranet site (that I created previously).

03 - Make connection to one SharePoint list.png

Once the list connection is established in the canvas app, I add a Form to the only screen in the canvas app and select the connected SharePoint list connected previously as the data source for the canvas app.

04 - Designate Data Source for Canvas App.png

This is as simple a canvas app as I can imagine.  Having made no edits, additions, or revisions, I save the canvas app ("TEST APP") and proceed to "Play" the app, expecting no problems with this most simplistic of canvas apps.

05 - Save single Data Source Canvas App.png

I return to the dashboard and select "Apps" and then on the ellipses for the newly created TEST APP, select "Play."  Sadly, this is where the story ends because no matter what I try, the Play action opens a screen that hangs with the message "Getting your data" and never "plays" the app.  Total frozen mode.

06 - Hanging Getting Your Data.png

I have spent 6 or 7 hours searching for a solution that makes sense.  However, in each potential solution I locate, there is always some unique element that renders the potential solution inapplicable to this most simple of canvas apps.

There must be something so obscenely simple that I am overlooking.  A default, no-change, no-edit canvas app with only one data connection should immediately play, right?  Please correct my blind-sightedness, community.

Thanks.

Chris.

So you don't want people to be able to select from a list of records, just submit new records? If that is the case, then you can change the Form's default mode to New.

The problem with this is that once submitted the details of the record will not be able to be edited.

Hi @Anonymous

Your app doesn't know which form to load because the form is not connected to a gallery. Create a gallery, with the SharePoint list as the data source and then (if your gallery is called Gallery1) set the Items property of your form to Gallery1.Selected

@Anonymous

This error typically appears when the Item property is not defined.

You can used this code in the Item property to show the 1st record for testing purposes until you have another method to navigate to the record.

LookUp(your_datasource_name,First(your_datasouce_name))

Thanks for the quick response, SKH19.  I typically deal in Power Apps that do not lend themselves to the gallery format.  Is there any other way without a gallery?  I already built the App directly off the SharePoint list, and the image below is how it is intended to look once I convert to the Canvas app.

Thanks in advance.

Would it make more sense to simply build a custom Power Apps form for the list, if you don't need people to browse through list entries etc.?

i.e. navigate straight to the list and choose the PowerApps ... Customize forms option

Yes - That is what I originally did (image below).  However, as I understand it, if I replicate that list form as a canvas app instead, I can use it in other places than just the list, such as on a page.  If I have to leave it as such, I can live with it.  However, there are instances where it would help users to simply access the form from certain pages without two-hopping to the list first before accessing the form.

Thanks.

Thanks for the suggestion.  It is probably something I am not doing correctly, but in the item property for the form, I added your suggested code (changing the data source list to the appropriate list /data source name), and I still received the same Getting your data message of death.

Thanks.

Chris.

Thanks, SKH19.  That did the trick - I had obviously not considered that.  "New" for the canvas app actually is sufficient because I have the same app duplicated as a SharePoint list form app in the data source list.  Users might desire to save new items from various pages.  This approach allows me to embed a button for the "New" item canvas app in whatever page is appropriate.  If edits need to occur, the user will have to go to the list first to find what they want to edit, and in this situation, the SharePoint list form will drive that edit/update.

Thanks so much.  It was right in front of my face.
