Sort Gallery by Last Inspected Date

I am very new to PowerApps so excuse my newbie question.  When I am viewing the Gallery, I would like to have the data sorted based on the Latest Inspection date for each Vehicle.  Currently I have a summary of each record in the gallery showing Vehicle #, Department, and Date Inspected.  The goal is to be able to show the latest record from the SharePoint list for each vehicle (there are about 70 different vehicles) by the inspect date.

Currently the FX Function for the Gallery is just showing the table 'Vehicle Inspections'.  I have attempted to use the Sort and SortByColumns but it continues to give errors.  The date field in the SharePoint list is formatted as Date and Time (just using the Short Date though) and allowing the use of a date picker in the Edit Screen so I think the data is being stored as an actual date.

What am I missing?

I think you're on the right track
this should work, change items property of gallery with
SortByColumns('Vehicle Inspections', "Date Inspected", SortOrder.Descending)

That worked great.  Now the only other trick is to better understand the filtering options to only show the latest record based on date by the vehicle number.  PowerApps seems more difficult to learn all of the tricks so thankful for this resource.  Maybe I am just too old.

I'm not sure if I understand it
so you can add SortByColumngs(Filter('Vehicle Options', 'Vehicle Number' = "xy"),"Date Inspected", SortOrder.Descending)

This was just something that was suggested after I started to make this app.  Sorry for not explaining in detail.

The SharePoint list is called 'VEHICLE INSPECTION'.  The field INSPECTIONDATE is the field that it is currently sorting on using your formula: SortByColumns('VEHICLE INSPECTIONS',"INSPECTIONDATE", SortOrder.Descending)

Which works great.

I attached a screenshot of the Gallery.  Currently that is all that I want to display as a summary.  Department is necessary since the same vehicle number is used by multiple departments.  The Green and Red circles represent the inspection status based on a field called INSPECTION_RESULT which is currently a manual option but trying to make it automatic based on other fields but that is another topic.

So in the example screen shot, you can see there are 2 vehicles with ID #1.  The goal is to only show the #1 entry with the latest inspection date of 12/31/2023 along with Vehicle #2 and so on.

to make it simple you can use
First(Filter(SortByColumns('Vehicle Inspection', "Inspection Date", SortOrder.Descending), VehicleID = "#1"))
this will sort by inspection date then filter by given ID and return the first item from this list which is indeed the latest inspection done on vehicle #1

So in this example, this will return on vehicles with the matching ID?  My thought was if I had 2 inspections with different dates for 15 different vehicles, the sort would only show the latest inspection based on the most current date.

I think I did not explain myself well enough and it is due to my lack of understanding PowerApp.  The formula to sort  SortByColumns('VEHICLE INSPECTIONS',"INSPECTIONDATE", SortOrder.Descending) is working as intended.  Is it possible to do an additional sort within the Gallery that would first sort it by INSPECTIONDATE and then by DEPARTMENT?  So I would see a single list of records with the most recent date at the top and then the secondary sort would be by DEPARTMENT name so all departmental vehicles would show up in sequential order?

In the attached image, if the sort was working correctly, the record for Vehicle 2 for the Electric department would be sorted before Vehicle 1.

Would it be better to first sort by Department and then by Inspection Date?  The date being entered is just MM/DD/YYYY but I am assuming it is also recording time in the background?

If I use:  SortByColumns('VEHICLE INSPECTIONS',"INSPECTIONDATE", SortOrder.Descending), how can I make the Sort Icon button work to resort the list in Ascending order? @scalca
