The main problem I have with PowerApps is when a cloud app will not open. Saving works fine. PG is aware of the root cause and replied that it was not a problem with my app, but server-side. I am starting to think the heavier parts of my app have something to do with it. 

 

I have 3 main projects going on. For each project, I have 3 cloud apps. They each have a different purpose:

  • Stable copy
  • Test copy #1
  • Test copy #2

I need to have that many because if I save over the Stable copy, the end user is stuck with a copy that doesn't work. So I save to Test copy #1 first. If it's good, I save on top of the Stable copy. 

 

2 of my projects save an open without a problem, but the third one has heavy Patch, Update, and UpdateIf. Do you guys have this problem where the app will not open? I am wondering what I can avoid putting in my app that could ensure that it can be opened.

I've been running some tests. There exists a limit either in the length of code or the number of total objects that determine whether an app will not open from the cloud.

 

Using a copy of an app that had not been opening, I ended up separating my app into two smaller apps. Both of them were able to open at that point. The original app had a screen that had more than 40 objects. This suggested that perhaps there is a limit in the number of total objects you could have.

 

In an older test, I simply deleted a button that had lots of Patch code and nested IFs in it and re-saved. It was able to open from the cloud at that point. 

 

It's hard to say if the bug is affected by one or the other at this point, but it is one or both of them.

Some things I know for sure are not a factor. The filesize does not prevent an app from opening. Older apps I made used lots of local tables and media. My filesize hit 5MB yet the apps still opened. Trimming it down by using tables that referenced URLs to the images and audio files brought it down to 120KB and the app was still able to open.

Yes it is "solved," but I qualify it more as a compromise. I posed this question to find out alternatives to actions like splitting an app into 2 apps.

 

My method not a good solution because my users need to exit and open a new app. That would be okay in the long-term when PowerApps is able to open multiple instances, but in the short-term is not viable when you need it to function. It is also not practical to cut down on Patch when data collection is central to the purpose of an app. 

 

So besides splitting the app and cutting down patch, what else are developers doing to ensure their apps open?

From your reply, it seems to be caused by the lots of Patch on a button, you can try to use more than one buttons/controls to host the lots of Patch instead of one.

I am also having issues with opening my app which is mostly a copy of the survey template.

I have a local copy of my app (one collect function - no patch functions) which opens fine.

I saved the local copy to the cloud so that it is more accessible.

But I have been unable to open the cloud app from the client. I (accidentally) left my power apps open overnight and in the morning it still hadn't loaded...

Summer of Solutions | Week 4 Results | Winners will be posted on July 24th

We are excited to announce the Summer of Solutions Challenge!   This challenge is kicking off on Monday, June 17th and will run for (4) weeks.  The challenge is open to all Power Platform (Power Apps, Power Automate, Copilot Studio & Power Pages) community members. We invite you to participate in a quest to provide solutions in the Forums to as many questions as you can. Answers can be provided in all the communities.    Entry Period: This Challenge will consist of four weekly Entry Periods as follows (each an “Entry Period”)   - 12:00 a.m. PT on June 17, 2024 – 11:59 p.m. PT on June 23, 2024 - 12:00 a.m. PT on June 24, 2024 – 11:59 p.m. PT on June 30, 2024 - 12:00 a.m. PT on July 1, 2024 – 11:59 p.m. PT on July 7, 2024 - 12:00 a.m. PT on July 8, 2024 – 11:59 p.m. PT on July 14, 2024   Entries will be eligible for the Entry Period in which they are received and will not carryover to subsequent weekly entry periods.  You must enter into each weekly Entry Period separately.   How to Enter: We invite you to participate in a quest to provide "Accepted Solutions" to as many questions as you can. Answers can be provided in all the communities.
