Using Powerapps with Teams (Fluent UI control documentation)

I'm trying to build an app in PowerApps for Teams using Dataverse as my data source.  I'd like to use the Fluent UI controls since they will be supported going forward, but I'm not finding the current documentation very useful.  It looks like the controls are setup only to use Dataverse as a source since it's not clear how to set the items to anything else.  I have a table called Items and I want to filter my gallery by CategoryName.  I've tried using Distinct to filter individual category names, I've tried dumping the Items table into a collection and using distinct on the collection and I've tried hard coding the current values as a workaround.  With either combobox or radio group, I get check boxes but no text.  Do I have to set up a new table with the values, or am I missing something here?

For the collection, I've tried hard coding the items as ["Food","NonFood"] and ["Food","NonFood"].Value just to get an idea of how it's supposed to look.  I've tried also using colCategory.Result and just plain colCategory, but I see only three check boxes and no text.  The collection shows three items, "Food", "Refrigerator", and "Non-Food".

If I use the table, I can get the combobox to work by placing the category name list as the first field, but what I'd like really is some kind of documentation on how this is supposed to work or comparing the new control to the old control more explicitly.  Thanks for any suggestions.

Hi @Threepointz ,

You will need to edit display field for Combo boxes added in PowerApps for teams, Result for Distinct items or Value for hard coded items. This is one of the differences between Fluent UI Combo box and classic Combo box.

Additonal information:

I added a textbox and one selected item displays, using combobox2.selected.result.  combobox2.selecteditems and combobox2.selecteditems.result cause an error message.  Multiple select is turned on.

Hi @Threepointz ,

I'm afraid there is no such documentations that detailed describing differences between Fluent UI controls and classic controls except a blog below:

https://powerapps.microsoft.com/en-us/blog/modern-fluent-ui-controls-in-power-apps-preview/

You will be able to find the properties of all modern Fluent UI controls on:

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/powerapps/teams/use-the-fluent-ui-controls#difference-between-fluen...

Speaking of Fluent UI controls, I would treat them that appearance and some of properties changing but basically not far different from classic controls.

On your end, could you please share more details about the Items table? Which type is the "CategoryName" column, Choices or Text? Which controls are you really wanting to add into the App? What purpose would you like to achieve with these controls? What data or formulas are contained in Items or Value or other properties in these controls?

Base on your description I'm not quite clearly understood your requirements or goals. In the reply you are using a Combo box allows multiple selections, then the selected items would be a table format which could not be displayed in a Text Input no matter in Fluent UI controls or classic controls.

Please share more details so that we could provide specific support for you to resolve the problem, screenshots of App screens would be more helpful.

Thank you for your reply.  I'm using the combobox to filter a gallery, not for data entry.  The goal is to give the user a list of options, such as "Grocery, non-Food Items, Frozen, and Refrigerated" so when entering Inventory they can just display the storage facility they are currently in.  Frozen food is in the freezer, refrigerated food is in the walk-in, non-Food is in the store room, grocery is in the pantry, for example.  The categories come from a  Sharepoint List and are text values.  I was trying to use DISTINCT to list the categories without duplicates.  When that didn't work, I tried hard coding the categories in the Items property of the combo box.  I eventually created a table called CategoryNames which contains just the category names and I got that to work by setting the Items property to CategoryNames.  When trying to show the field, I'm using ComboBox2.Selected.CatName, which only shows the last selected item.  How would I show all the selected items, which you point out is actually a table?

Hi @Threepointz ,

If using Distinct(SPList, Category) in the Items of the Combo box, then you could set Default of the Text input to:

Concat(ComboBox2.SelectedItems.Result,Result & " ")

if using hard coded table, then the Default of Text input:

Concat(ComboBox2.SelectedItems.Value,Value & " ")

The Concat function would concatenates the result of a formula applied across all the records of a table, resulting in a single string:

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/powerapps/maker/canvas-apps/functions/function-concatenate

Then speaking of Check box, you will need to add into a Vertical gallery so that will help show exact amount of check boxes base on item amount of the Gallery. When using hard coded values as Items of the Combo box, please refer to my demonstration below:

Hope this helps.

I'm posting a simplified screen image with just the controls I'm trying to set up.  The combo box with the collection shows the correct number of items, but no text, whether I set the items to ColCat or ColCat.Result.  I have a gallery with the same filter and it works by using ColCat as the data and Result as the field for the title.  The button on the form just creates the collection.  I'm using the labels to document what I see as the appropriate functions.  What am I missing when using the combobox with the collection?

See attached.

This is what I needed to see.  The "Result" field shows as the second field in the list of fields. After deleting the first field, "CatName". the values showed up properly.  Thanks for the screen shot.
