Validate() Function

Hi all,

Hoping someone could give me a bit of a hand regarding my validate function.

TLDR, I have a collection of records, and I want to validate each record before it is patched using the validate function; would be in the displaymode property of the submit button. Example data as follows:

MGeale_0-1703805199901.png

I will eventually have the data directly patched into the SP list, 'Log' but for the moment, it goes into a collection while I'm building the app. Log is my SP data source, CountryCode is a SP list/Collection of the world's country codes in the exact same structure as the source. wNumbers is a list of mobile numbers that I have input in colNumbers. The following is how I piece it all together, and create the 'collection' that creates the above table:

Clear(TestyMcTestFace);
With(
    {
        wLog: Log,
        wCountryCode: ForAll(
            Trim(
                Split(
                    LookUp(
                        colCountry_Codes,
                        Title = DataCardValue2.Selected.Value
                    ).Country_x0020_Code,
                    Char(44) & Char(32)
                )
            ),
            {
                Value: Substitute(
                    ThisRecord.Value,
                    Char(45),
                    Blank()
                )
            }
        ),
        wNumbers: ForAll(
            Trim(
                Split(
                    Index(
                        colNumbers,
                        1
                    ).Value,
                    Char(44)
                )
            ),
            {Result: ThisRecord.Value}
        )
    },
    With(
        {
            wPatchableData: Ungroup(
                ForAll(
                    wNumbers,
                    ForAll(
                        wCountryCode,
                        If(
                            !IsBlank(Result),
                            {
                                Title: If(
                                    !StartsWith(
                                        Result,
                                        Char(43) & Value
                                    ),
                                    Char(43) & Value & Mid(
                                        Result,
                                        2,
                                        Len(Result) - 1
                                    ),

                                Template: DataCardValue1.Selected.Value,
                                Message: DataCardValue3.Text,
                                Country: DataCardValue2.Selected.Value
                            }
                        )
                    )
                ),
                "Value"
            )
        },
        //replace here with patch statement
        Collect(
            TestyMcTestFace,
            wPatchableData
        );
        With(
            {
                wError: If(
                    !IsEmpty(Errors(wLog)),
                    Concat(
                        Errors(wLog),
                        Column & Char(58) & Char(32) & Message
                    )
                )
            },
            //notify if there was a problem patching
            Notify(
                wError,
                NotificationType.Error
            );
        )
    );
    //Clear(TestyMcTestFace)
);

I know there is a validate function and I would like to validate each row of the TestyMcTestFace collection, before the displayMode property switches to edit and allows for the code to actually be patched. Using what I made for the Collection logic, I made up this code as a bit of a starting point, but I think I'm getting a little tripped up on the Validation logic.

With(
    {
        wLog: Log,
        wCountryCode: ForAll(
            Trim(
                Split(
                    LookUp(
                        colCountry_Codes,
                        Title = DataCardValue2.Selected.Value
                    ).Country_x0020_Code,
                    Char(44) & Char(32)
                )
            ),
            {
                Value: Substitute(
                    ThisRecord.Value,
                    Char(45),
                    Blank()
                )
            }
        ),
        wNumbers: ForAll(
            Trim(
                Split(
                    Index(
                        colNumbers,

                    ).Value,
                    Char(44)
                )
            ),

            },
            wDatatoValidate
        )
    )
)

I'm mainly following Matt Devaney's Validate article for the validation side of things, but not 100% sure what I'm doing wrong as he only appears to be following a single-line schema logic.

Anyone got any ideas?

Thanks in advance, and have a happy new year!

Cheers

Sorry forgot to come back to everyone regarding this thread. Tried a couple of different solutions and ultimately came up with the following which works a treat.

Clear(colInvalidNumbers);
Clear(colValidNumbers);
With(
    {
        wLog: Log,
        wInput: ForAll(
            colNumbers,
            {Result: ThisRecord.FullMatch}
        ),
        wCountry: AddColumns(
            ShowColumns(
                Filter(
                    colCountry_Codes,
                    Title in DataCardValue2.SelectedItems.Value
                ),
                "Country_x0020_Code",
                "E_x002e_164"

the validate function returns blank in case data passes validation, otherwise it would return an error message

here you'll find some details in the documentation https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/power-platform/power-fx/reference/function-validate#examples

so in your displaymode property of submit button you'll have to add a condition to check whether validation returns blank or error message.

using the If(IsBlank() function you would be able to change displaymode from disabled to edit

I think this is the missing part here

hey @MGeale

try this:

// Clear existing data in the test collection
Clear(TestyMcTestFace);

// Main logic block

Greetings

hey @mmbr1606,

Apologies for my tardiness. Unless I'm doing something wrong, I can't seem to get your provided validates/patches statement to work; I can't seem to get Validate to operate on a whole row... just a single column.

Let me know your thoughts

please try this instad:

Greetings

Something is wigging out with the validate function - particularly the validationResult: Validate('Log', Defaults('Log'), CurrentRecord. Current Record I already had to update because it can't reference itself from within a With block so I just changed it to ThisRecord.

Heres the errors on the Validate Statement.

Greetings

Hey @mmbr1606,

Unfortunately, your above didn't seem to work or rather was throwing out errors. As such, I took a bit of a step back, rethought my logic, and ultimately got it to work. Code is as follows:

Clear(colInvalidNumbers);
Clear(colValidNumbers);
With(
    {
        wLog: Log,
        wInput: ForAll(
            colNumbers,
            {Result: ThisRecord.FullMatch}
        ),
        wCountry: AddColumns(
            ShowColumns(
                Filter(
                    colCountry_Codes,
                    Title in DataCardValue5.SelectedItems.Value
                ),
                "Country_x0020_Code",
                "E_x002e_164"
            ),
            "Length",
            Len(
                Substitute(
                    E_x002e_164,
                    Char(32),
                    Blank()
                )
            )
        )
    },
    With(
        {
            wPreformatting: ForAll(
                Ungroup(
                    ForAll(
                        wInput,
                        ForAll(
                            wCountry,
                            If(
                                !StartsWith(

However, one thing I would appreciate your two cents on is the displaymode logic Devaney has done in the tutorial. Now understandably, I'm doing the logic slightly different because of the fact that I'm doing the validation on a bunch of records versus a singular string which is what the Validate() function I think is intended for. As such, here is the logic that I've managed to do up on the  displayMode, but for some reason, it always seem to invert - I've tried IsEmpty on the table, but can never seem to get it to work. Any ideas? Bit of a brain fart!

do you get any error messages, or something similar? Or how does the issue show up?
