Variables not updating sometimes

Hello,

I am getting inconsistent behaviour with context variables not updating when the dropdown value is changed.

The Update context is on the OnChange of the dropdown.

In the screenshot below you can see the value of the variable vNewToFitQty should be 2, but the value in the text box I am using to test the right value is coming through shows 1.

Any idea on how/why that is happening.  It is not everytime the dropdown is changed.

I have also set the variables to be set back to Blank() on the dropdown using OnSelect as I thought that might help.

Hi @Rosie ,

The reason for this may be that you are changing the elements of the Variable without re-generating it - you really only need this

UpdateContext(
   {
      vContainers:
      LookUp(
         QPContainers,
         ContainerlD = dpdFCContainer.Selected.ContainerlD
      ),
      vOrders:
      LookUp(
         QPOrders,
         'Order Ref No’ = lblFCOrder.Text
      )
   }
);
UpdateContext(
   {
      vNewFittedQty: vOrders.'Fitted Qty' + l,
      vNewToFitQty: vOrders.'To Fit' - 1
   }
)

and then you will have the Variable combinations

vContainers.Containers
vContainers.Orders.'Order Ref No'
vOrders.'0 Customer'.'QP Customer Name'
vOrders.'Fitted Qty'
vOrders.'To Fit'

but I gave up on calculated labels years ago for the same reason - inconsistent re-generation when an element of the calculation was changed.

So if you ran the code (top bit) OnChange of dpdFCContainer and the bottom OnChange of whatever is being referred to in the Label, it all should work.

Thanks for your help.

My understanding was that SharePoint would not be able to deal with the number of records that will eventually exist.  Do you have a blog post about using SharePoint for large amounts of data or your decision to use SharePoint over Dataverse?

I seem to have consistent results now I am using this combination:

UpdateContext(
    {
        vContainerGUID:LookUp(QPContainers,ContainerID = dpdFCContainer.Selected.ContainerID).Containers,
        vOrder:LookUp(QPContainers,ContainerID = dpdFCContainer.Selected.ContainerID).Orders.'Order Ref No',
        vCustomer:LookUp(QPOrders,'Order Ref No' = lblFCOrder.Text).'O Customer'.'QP Customer Name'

        }
);

Then:

UpdateContext(
    {
    vNewFittedQty:LookUp(QPOrders,'Order Ref No'= lblFCOrder.Text).'Fitted Qty'+1,
    vNewToFitQty:LookUp(QPOrders,'Order Ref No'= lblFCOrder.Text).'To Fit'-1
    }
)

Hi @Rosie ,

Please try this first

vNewFittedQty: Value(lblFCFittedQty.Text) + 1,
vNewToFitQty : Value(lblFCToFitQty.Text) - 1

@WarrenBelz thanks for the help.

The data is still inconsistently wrong in the variables.

So vNewToFitQty should be 1

@Rosie ,

Are these calculated labels and if so, do they also "cascade" from other calculated labels ?

ToFit is a calculated column.
lblFCToFitQty is determined by

LookUp(Filter(QPOrders,'QPOrders (Views)'.'Active Orders'),'Order Ref No' = lblFCOrder.Text).'To Fit'

I have been using labels to hold all my "values" but I beleive it is better practice to use variables so I have been switching over.  It is causing many issues.

Hi @Rosie ,

Exactly where I was going - store the value in a Variable and you will find it should work.

I think my interpretation is different 🙂  I am not succeeding at using variables.

When I use labels then this works perfectly.

I have tried this but I still am getting inconsistent results.

I have tried using SUM, and nothing at all.  Same behaviour.

Right, I will give that a go.

There seem to be a lot of pitfalls using the dataverse functionality.  Seems logical to use it but it seems to cause many issues in a canvas app.

@Rosie ,

Dataverse - you had not mentioned that, although it actually should work better (I was assuming SharePoint).

You might try SharePoint (it is all that I use)
