View Form to Display Selected Gallery Item

Hello,

I have run into a problem that is driving me absolutely bonkers.

I have a VERY simple app, only one screen.

On the left is a gallery (Gallery1) that shows items from a sharepoint list (I'll call it Data Source Table Name). On the right, I have a form (Form1) which I changed the DefaultMode to View.

Gallery1 is showing my list items no problem. I have the next arrow on the gallery set to OnSelect Select(Parent).

Form1 Item is set to Gallery1.Selected. I also have OnSuccess set to Refresh('Data Source Table Name')

When I select the Next arrow, the Form1 does not update to show the gallery item selected. In addition there is an error on Form1. When I click the X error and select edit in formula bar, it's bringing me to the Item Gallery1.Selected formula.

I can't figure out what I've done. I have done this on a different app and it works fine. Am I missing something really simple? I even tried making a copy of my app that works, and just changing the data source/references and this error still appears. It is based on a very simple SharePoint list.

Hi @WarrenBelz , I am having issues viewing my items in the Gallery as a form. But was just wondering, in the above solution, what is the "YourListName"? Is it the items that I wish to view from the gallery ? Could you please explain

TIA.

@Remya-praveen ,

It is whatever list is the data source of the form and gallery.

Hi, I have been trying to solve for the same thing and none of the suggestions that have been mentioned in the thread have worked so far.

In the case of the app that I am developing, it is an attendance checklist app, and I wanted the app to have the functionality that after submitting the data, they can click an edit button and be able to change it and re-submit that data.

For now I have an Edit Icon button going to another screen, and wish to have certain details such as Name, ID number automatically displayed in the form. But unable to get the form to read this data based on clicking the button.

Is there another way in which this can be done @WarrenBelz ?

@Anonymous ,

You might post a new thread on this and include some details such as you data source type and name as well the relevant field and control names and your code (in Text)

@WarrenBelz Sure will do that!

Hi, can the data sources for the gallery and form be different? If the gallery field is a unique field across multiple forms is it possible to have different data sources. How can we lookup the field in this case?

@Pragya Yes to your 1st question.  I'll give you an example of an app I am developing atm.  The main data source is a SharePoint list.  Because I also implemented 4 tabs at the top of the screen, which basically are buttons that when clicked will filter the data source (a SharePoint list) so that the gallery will display only what each tab or button is semantically representing as per my requirements, I preload that filtering into 4 different global table variables and these data structures or tables become my data source for the gallery like so:

Switch(
    gbl_tab_selected,
    1,
    Set(
        gbl_Pending_tbl,
        Filter(
            SP_list,
            gbl_user_info.Email = Email, //'Created By'.DisplayName = global_UserInfo.FullName,
            Status.Value = "Pending"
        )
    ),
    2,
    Set(
        gbl_Approved_tbl,
        Filter(
            SP_list,
            gbl_user_info.Email = Email, //'Created By'.DisplayName = global_UserInfo.FullName,
            Status.Value = "Approved"
        )
    ),
    3,
    Set(
        gbl_Denied_tbl,
        Filter(
            SP_list,
            gbl_user_info.Email = Email,//'Created By'.DisplayName = global_UserInfo.FullName,
            Status.Value = "Denied"
        )
    ),
    4,
    Set(
        gbl_Canceled_tbl,
        Filter(
            SP_list,
            gbl_user_info.Email = Email,//'Created By'.DisplayName = global_UserInfo.FullName,
            Status.Value = "Canceled"
        )
    )
);

The data source for my form is the SharePoint list. When the user clicks an item in the gallery, that choice is dispatched to the form, which in turn retrieves the data from the SharePoint list for all the fields that have been added to the form (which are columns in the SharePoint list).

The gallery and the form are linked with the OnSelect event handler and another global variable called gbl_list_record.

So when the user clicks a gallery item, in the OnSelect property of the gallery we delegate  the call to the parent with:

Select(Parent)

and in the Parent OnSelect property we have:

Set(gbl_list_record, ThisItem)

Finally, the Item property of the form is set to:

gbl_list_record

while its Data source property is set to SP_list, or the SharePoint  list, or whatever data source you fancy using.

Now, based on my experience with this, I would say that your form could point to DB0_table0 and your gallery to DB1_table1 and so on.  There shouldn't be any limitation but considering all the bugs in Power Apps, you never know!  😁

For more learning, you should really check out @RezaDorrani's YT channel.  He is absolutely great at showing all these tips and tricks, plus going through the most common use cases in practical terms and showing you how to do it!  He is also a user here on this forum so perhaps you can find him and ask him directly.  Here is the link:

I realise this is a very old post, but the problem still exists. I encountered this problem this week with latest versions, but eventually I figured out what the problem was for my case.
In the gallery sidebar, I had renamed Gallery1.Title1 text field object to Galley1.Created. Turns out that this conflicted with the underlying SharePoint list has a Created field; all other design elements in my Main data panel/form got confused and was now referencing Gallery1.Created text label object instead of the underlying Gallery1.Selected.Created data element.

Renaming the object back to Gallery1.Title1 immediately resolved a number of errors/warnings.

Ironically, normally I wouldn’t use simple object names such as ‘Created’. Instead either just use the autogenerated object name or something like ‘lblGalleryItemCreated’ which wouldn’t have a name conflict.

Short story: use thoughtful unique object names, particularly when renaming auto-generated code.

n.b. I couldn’t get the alternative proposed solution of using varRecord to work; it kept complaining that I had conflicting references between the Form data source and the Gallery1.Selected varRecord, even though they were using the same underlying SharePoint list connection. Fortunately I gsolved the original root cause, so I didn’t need to keep banging my head on this workaround.
