Assign a tag in microsoft teams based on AAD attribute?

Hello All,

 

I would like to know if there is a way to give people in a Teams channel a tag, based on an AAD attribute. 

For instance, if somebody has "finance" filled into their department in AAD, they would get a finance tag in said team. 

 

Can Power automate, automate this process?

That should be possible by using for a example a List users method of the Graph API with a $filter query on the Department field. After that you can filter the list of tags in a team action outputs by using a filter array to retrieve the tag id. In an apply to each loop you can add the members one by one to the tag.

 

Below is an example.

This example assumes that the users are already part of the team as a member and that the tag already exists in the team itself

 

1. The Send an HTTP request (Office 365 Groups Connector) uses the following URI

 

 

https://graph.microsoft.com/v1.0/users/?$filter=department eq '@{variables('Department')}'&$select=id,department,userprincipalname

 

 

2. The apply to each loop loops through the results of that action:

 

body('Send_an_HTTP_request')['value']

 

 

3. The add member to a tag uses the id of the first item of the Filter Array action outputs for the Tag Id field

 

body('Filter_array')[0]['id']

 

 

4. The following expression is used for the User ID field

 

item()['id']

Thanks for the extensive respons.

I cannot find the "send an http request" though? Doesn't see, to be available. It is available as an office 365 outlook (or user) action.

Normally it should be listed as an action under the Office 365 Groups Connector.

Thanks, found it! I finished the flow, the tester said it worked and I ran it.... but tags aren't being applied to the users in said team? 

 

Is there anything else I should keep an eye on? The Variable is just a string with the value of Department right? 

 

I also imagine that the tag in the team needs to have the same name as the department in AAD?

Hi @Bartfliet,

 

Yes, that is correct. It is a string variable with the Department value in it.

 

Be aware that Filter array filtering is case sensitive. If the department name is Finance and the tag is finance it would not work.

 

If you want to mitigate that you could use a toLower function in the where part of the Filter Array action for both fields of the comparison (the Name field and Department variable).

I have checked everything again and have seen after I run the flow that in the "filter array" it does say  "member count: 2" Which are the number of tags as "finance" that I applied manually. So it does seem to be picking up the tags in the team its self, but it isn't automatically applying the "finance" tag to other members in the department? 

 

I was wondering... does the user who runs the flow need admin access to AAD, or can this be run by a regular user? I am at the moment running this from my regular account but could switch to my admin account if needed?

In my setup I had ownership of the team I tested with. So, I would definitely try and switch to the admin account, that might be worth double checking.

 

And like mentioned in one of my earlier replies. The user needs to be a member of the team first before you add them as a member of tag. But I believe it would error, so that would be noticeable in the flow run.

Summer of Solutions | Week 4 Results | Winners will be posted on July 24th

We are excited to announce the Summer of Solutions Challenge!    This challenge is kicking off on Monday, June 17th and will run for (4) weeks.  The challenge is open to all Power Platform (Power Apps, Power Automate, Copilot Studio & Power Pages) community members. We invite you to participate in a quest to provide solutions to as many questions as you can. Answers can be provided in all the communities.    Entry Period: This Challenge will consist of four weekly Entry Periods as follows (each an “Entry Period”)   - 12:00 a.m. PT on June 17, 2024 – 11:59 p.m. PT on June 23, 2024 - 12:00 a.m. PT on June 24, 2024 – 11:59 p.m. PT on June 30, 2024 - 12:00 a.m. PT on July 1, 2024 – 11:59 p.m. PT on July 7, 2024 - 12:00 a.m. PT on July 8, 2024 – 11:59 p.m. PT on July 14, 2024   Entries will be eligible for the Entry Period in which they are received and will not carryover to subsequent weekly entry periods.  You must enter into each weekly Entry Period separately.   How to Enter: We invite you to participate in a quest to provide "Accepted Solutions" to as many questions as you can.
