Best way to update sharepoint list based on a condition using power automate

Hello,

I am currently trying to update a column in SharePoint list using Power Automate yet i am running into a problem where it creates a loop when i use the update item action. Is there a way to still use the same list as the trigger and the update item action? I have tried to use the trigger conditions but still goes into a loop. Any help will be appreciated.

@vivekpande18 i am have a choice column name Status and getting the value and i am trying to update current date on a column name Time Completed.

Hi @patricia_r ,

I would suggest you configure your flow using a service account or any account that doesn't participate in that list and add one more trigger condition as shown below.

@not(contains(toLower(triggerOutputs()?['body/Editor/Claims']), toLower('Account email address')))

This will avoid triggering your flow if anything is updated from your Id.

@vivekpande18 It does not seem to work as the service account has to have access to the list in SP other wise it won't trigged the flow. I still get the loop

Yes, service account should have access to SP list. 

If you can't give access, then you need to add one flag column in the list and you need to set the flag colum to yes/no whenever you you want your flow to run. 

Ads this colum  condition in trigger condition. 

In this approach, you need to add one extra column.

@vivekpande18 Thank you for you response. Can you provide detail steps? Another issue that i am facing is that i am not able to test the updates on the list since i am adding this @not(contains(toLower(triggerOutputs()?['body/Editor/Claims']), toLower('Account email address'))). Is there another way to do this?

Hi @patricia_r ,

Find below steps for column approach

1- Create flag column name - RunFlow (you can put any name) of Yes/No column type. The column default value should be Yes

2- Need to add the condition in Trigger condition

Trigger condition : @equals(triggerOutputs()?['body/RunFlow'], true)

Note : Change your column name accordingly.

3- While updating the data, you need to update the flag column to No

Now your flow will not run after updating from flow.

Note :  If updated by other user make sure to reset the RunFlow column value to Yes to run the flow.
