Combine Two DAX Queries into One CSV Table, and Later Multiple CSV Tables into Different Worksheets in One Excel File

Dear Microsoft Power Automate Community,

Refer to the attached screenshot, I have created a flow to run the recurrence on three (3) Scopes that will run DAX queries on the same Power BI dataset. However, I have the following queries for the next steps:

1) How to combine two (2) DAX queries into one (1) single CSV table? Should I use "first table rows" or "output" from Create CSV Table? Or should I use Compose/Select then use "Union" function to join them?

2) With the generated CSV tables, how to combine these CSV tables into three (3) different Worksheets in one (1) single Excel file?

I have tried to google-ed the answers from this forum (such as the link below), but I still can't understand how to do it yet.

Combine Multiple CSV tables into one file - Power Platform Community (microsoft.com)

Much appreciated for your advise.

Hi @v-yueyun-msft,

Thanks for your reply.

I changed Json From to body('Select_2b') and the test flow was successfully completed.

However, the data shown in the csv file was displayed in 1 single line/row (see the screenshot below).

Here's the Inputs and Outputs from "Join 2b" action:

Hi , @jwhk

Can you click here and copy the output to me  to test?

Hi @v-yueyun-msft,

I copied and pasted the Inputs and Outputs of "Join 2b" action in the attached file.

Hi , @jwhk

Thanks for your response! I test it in my side , it seems it has no issue...

vyueyunmsft_0-1707378002706.pngvyueyunmsft_1-1707378064091.png

decodeUriComponent('%0D%0A')

And this is my output of my Join action and it is the same as yours ... Can you check the "Create file" in your side?

@v-yueyun-msft,

Thanks for your feedback yesterday.

I checked "Create file 2b" action and noticed I put the wrong output in File Content. The correct output is body('Join_2b'), not Outputs('Join_2b').

Now the csv file looks great except the missing figure "135150" for total of [Sum of Quantity] in the right-hand side table.

jwhk_0-1707433820118.png

If you look at the Outputs of "Create CSV table 2b" action, you can see 135150 there.

jwhk_1-1707433975255.png

But 135150 started missing from the Outputs of "Select 2b" action (if you refer to the txt file I attached in my previous message).

Refer to the screenshot below, you can see "Run a query against a dataset 2b" and "Create CSV table 2b" actions were ran below the "Condition" action. Is this the reason why 135150 was missing from "Select 2b" action?

jwhk_2-1707434226292.png

Hi , @jwhk

Thanks for your response! This seems your condition is opposite.

Hi @v-yueyun-msft,

Thanks for your feedback last Friday and hope you have a wonderful lunar new year celebration.

I believe my condition was set correctly, because if I change the condition based on your advice, the csv file has reversed the display of 2 DAX queries (see the screenshot below) and the figure "135150" for total of [Sum of Quantity] is still missing.

jwhk_1-1707797817484.png

I have rollbacked my condition as followed which diplayed the correct 2 DAX queries in the correct position in csv file except the missing figure "135150":

jwhk_0-1707802438869.png

Condition:

Dataset 2a Rows > Dataset 2b Rows

If Yes, Select 2a:

range(0,length(outputs('Run_a_query_against_a_dataset_2a')?['body/firstTableRows']))
concat(split(body('Create_CSV_table_2b'), decodeUriComponent('%0D%0A'))?[item()], ',,,', split(body('Create_CSV_table_2a'), decodeUriComponent('%0D%0A'))?[item()])

If No, Select 2b:
range(0,length(outputs('Run_a_query_against_a_dataset_2b')?['body/firstTableRows']))
concat(split(body('Create_CSV_table_2a'), decodeUriComponent('%0D%0A'))?[item()], ',,,', split(body('Create_CSV_table_2b'), decodeUriComponent('%0D%0A'))?[item()])

For another DAX queries for Dataset 1a Rows and Dataset 1b Rows, I put the similar conditions as below.

Condition:

Dataset 1a Rows > Dataset 1b Rows

If Yes, Select 1a:

range(0,length(outputs('Run_a_query_against_a_dataset_1a')?['body/firstTableRows']))
concat(split(body('Create_CSV_table_1b'), decodeUriComponent('%0D%0A'))?[item()], ',,,', split(body('Create_CSV_table_1a'), decodeUriComponent('%0D%0A'))?[item()])

If No, Select 1b:
range(0,length(outputs('Run_a_query_against_a_dataset_1b')?['body/firstTableRows']))
concat(split(body('Create_CSV_table_1a'), decodeUriComponent('%0D%0A'))?[item()], ',,,', split(body('Create_CSV_table_1b'), decodeUriComponent('%0D%0A'))?[item()])

Then, this csv file has 2 issues:

1) The DAX query on the right-hand side has misalignment after row 7.

2) The figure of 119,660 for the total [Quantity] is missing for DAX query on the right-hand side.

Hi @v-yueyun-msft,

Hope this message finds you well.

Any update based on my last feedback sent a week ago?

I'm thinking whether this will help to make the flow actions perform better in this way for joining 2 DAX queries into 1 single CSV file. But because I add "Select1a" and "Select 1b" actions after the respective "Run a query against a dataset" action, I wonder what to change in range() and concat() in "Select 1c" and Select 1d" actions.

Run a query against a database 1a > Select 1a (to rename the column names/headers) > Create CSV table 1a > Condition (Dataset 1 Row > Dataset 2 Row )

and

Run a query against a database 1b > Select 1b (to rename the column names/headers) > Create CSV table 1b > Condition (Dataset 1 Row > Dataset 2 Row )

If condition = true:

Select 1a (for range(First Table Row Dataset1) and concat(Create CSV table 1b + Create CSV table 1a)) > Join 1a > Create file 1a

If condition = false:

Select 1b (for range(First Table Row Dataset2) and concat(Create CSV table 1a + Create CSV table 1b)) > Join 1b > Create file 1b

jwhk_0-1708487770882.png

Hi , @jwhk

Thanks for your response ! In my side , i use this logic.

if dataset 1a > dataset 1b:
if yes:

range(0, length(outputs('Run_a_query_against_a_dataset')?['body/firstTableRows']))

concat(split(body('Create_CSV_table_1a'), decodeUriComponent('%0D%0A'))?[item()], ',,,', split(body('Create_CSV_table_1b'), decodeUriComponent('%0D%0A'))?[item()])

if no:
range( 0 , length(outputs('Run_a_query_against_a_dataset_2')?['body/firstTableRows']) )

concat( split(body('Create_CSV_table_1b'),decodeUriComponent('%0D%0A'))?[item()] , ',,,' , split(body('Create_CSV_table_1a'),decodeUriComponent('%0D%0A'))?[item()] )

Yueyun Zhang

Hi @v-yueyun-msft,

Thanks for your reply.

This is what I get in CSV file by following your logic.

jwhk_1-1708652829963.png

And, this is what I get if I retain the same logic I set earlier.

jwhk_0-1708652579551.png

I didn't see any differences except the 2 tables are displayed in left right or right left. However the figure "135150" for total of [Sum of Quantity] is still missing after the "Condition" action.

Could you advise how to fix this?

Hi , @jwhk

Thanks for your response! Can you show me your output of these actions ?In my side it looks like this.

Can you check if your total "135150" in it?

vyueyunmsft_0-1708655077882.png

Best Regards,

Yueyun Zhang

Hi @v-yueyun-msft,

Yes I can see 137550 in Create CSV table (see below).

jwhk_0-1708659383763.png

Then, it went missing after the "Condition" action, and doesn't show in the output of "Select" action.

jwhk_1-1708659456587.png

Hi , @jwhk

Thanks for your response! Sorry , this may my mistake in the "Select" action, you need to change the expression:

vyueyunmsft_0-1708666930514.png

range(0, add( length(outputs('Run_a_query_against_a_dataset')?['body/firstTableRows']),1))

Best Regards,

Yueyun Zhang

Hi @v-yueyun-msft,

Thanks for your feedback last week.

The new expression for the range() function finally fixed the missing total of [Sum of Quantity].

However, for another DAX queries for Dataset 1a Rows and Dataset 1b Rows, after I changed the expression on range() function, the figure of 346,100 for the total [Quantity] is showing on top of the right-hand side.

jwhk_2-1708907664922.png

Could you advise how to fix this issue?

Hi , @jwhk

This is strange... Can your check if your left dataset return the total in your create csv table action?

Best Regards,

Yueyun Zhang

Hi @v-yueyun-msft,

Yes I can see the total in Inputs and Outputs of Create CSV table action (see the screenshot below).

jwhk_1-1708922205959.png

Hi, @jwhk

So dose it caused by your dax code return the total value in your first row?

Best Regards,

Yueyun Zhang

Hi @v-yueyun-msft,

Refer to the screenshot below, I can see the total value (346100) in the beginning of Output of "Run a query against a dataset" action.

jwhk_0-1709002854752.png

I attached the DAX query in this post and see if you can find the total value is showing in the first row.

Hi , @jwhk

Thanks for your quick response! Sorry for that i am not a Power BI expert🤣. You can check it in Dax Studio using this dax code so that you can see the table return from the Dax.

Hi @AlexEncodian,

Thanks for your reply 3 weeks ago.

Refer to Merge Excel Files – Encodian Customer Help, I have question on Step 5 for "Apply to each" and "Get file content" action. Could you tell me what is this "value" in "Select an output from previous steps" field and "Identifier" in "File Identifier" field?

jwhk_0-1709097315092.png

In my "Select An Output From Previous Steps" field, I only can choose Outputs, body/value, Body, ID, Title and Modified in the list (see below).

jwhk_1-1709097466701.png

For "File Identifier" field, it is for selecting a file from the SharePoint folder (see below). There is no "Identifier" option in the list.

@v-yueyun-msft, do you think you can help me on this?
