Creating an excel sheet when a file is dropped into a folder

To start off, my flow process starts by a user uploading a file into a folder. A variable is then set to pending. After that triggers, a new folder is created with the name of the file implemented. The problem I am having is I need to create an excel worksheet with the name of the file but I am getting an error.

I am trying to create a whole new excel sheet within that folder and add files later. Am I using the right option?

That is weird. I answered this and it never posted...so it may post twice.

What I suggested was to have a blank Excel spreadsheet act as a template and then:

1. Use a Get File Content to get the content for this blank spreadsheet.

2. Then use the content from this action to insert into your create item action.

Hi @Anonymous ,

Here is the working solution below, you need to follow all the below steps.

ArchitectMadhan_0-1627406447553.png

Explanation for each step:

You need to get the name of the file dropped in the "ToBeApproved" folder as shown below.

ArchitectMadhan_1-1627406609225.png

To extract the filename you need to use the formula.

substring(variables('varFilenameWithExtn'),0,lastIndexOf(variables('varFilenameWithExtn'),'.'))

You need to have a dummy spreadsheet (TaskBook.xlsx) with few columns and name those selection as Table (TaskTable). You can add the column values to that excel sheet using "Add row to table".

The above steps are exactly for your requirement.

Here is the name of the file uploaded to the folder "ToBeApproved".

Here is the folder created in the name of the file uploaded.

My intention is to create a folder and a new excel template (this template has a table that contains all the formulas which we use for inspection) whenever a Microsoft form is submitted. This excel file should have a sequence number (eg. IP-001) for each form submitted.

Below are the ways I have tried to do this through the knowledge I have. When I run the test, the test gets stuck in time at ‘When a file is created in a folder’.

Kindly help

@Anonymous Did you resolve this issue? The problem is that you are trying to use two triggers in one flow, and from your logic, you shouldn't need two triggers (the second trigger is the "When a File is created in a folder").

I would remove all the steps from When a file is created in a folder to the create new folder.

So the logic would be:

  1. Start flow once form submitted
  2. Create a folder (in the location you require it)
  3. Do the logic to update the excel sequence ID
  4. Copy that excel file into the newly created folder you did in step 2
