MessageID vs Internet Message ID

Is it possible to retrieve an email using the Internet Message Id?

The Outlook 365 GetEmail activity is expecting only base64 message Id. But if we pass the Internet Message ID, it’s not working.

Any ideas on how to use the Internet MessageId to retrieve an email in PowerAutomate?

Try to use a GRAPH request to retrieve an email by Internet Message ID.

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried that approach as well. MSGraph also needs the base64 message id only.

Are you saying you cannot create a GRAPH request that retrieves a message(s) by Internet Message ID?

Yes Victor. When we pass the Internet Message ID, getting "ID is malformed". Same place when we provide the base64 value, email is getting retrieved fine

You have to execute a query to find a message ID  by Internet Message ID.

Play a bit with GRAPH explorer.

It just means there are no a message with this id. Check the id.

Hi @BharathiRaja ,

Trying to flag and/or move email by using Power Automate, I find myself into same issue.

But I have discovered, that by using the "Get email" action using both "original" Message ID (as it was when the message was received in Inbox) along with the "Internet Message Id" I could find the "new Message ID" required for actions where only Message ID is requested.

This way the message will be found no matter where was moved in that mailbox without the need of Graph calls. 😉

Sorry I don't catch your point. Are you saying the "Get email (V2)" action returns different values depending on if "Internet Message Id" is empty or not?

Great. This seems to easy solution. All we need to do is pass some dummy value for the Mandatory 'Message ID' parameter and actual 'Internet Message ID', I am able to retreive the email directly without Graph calls / additional parsing. Thanks

Yes, it seems strange but it will return different results:

- using just the MessageID will search exactly for that ID and if not found you'll get an error

- using along with the Internet Message ID, will search that message in any folder (if it was moved) and will get it unless it was deleted for good.

Well now I see - if you populate the "Internet Message Id", you have to place some garbage to "Message Id".
