Run script (Excel) quota

Hi

Does Run Script (to run Excel Online's Office Scripts) have a daily limit of runs?

After doing intensive testing today, our flows suddenly came to a halt at a Run Script block with the message:

Out of call volume quota. Quota will be replenished in 14:34:11.

The other flows without Run Script are not affected.

Does this mean I can only again start using Run Script in 14.5 hours?
What is the quota on Run Script and where can I see how many we have left for the day?
I am not the admin of our global account, so cannot see the specifics of our plan, but after some snooping around I think I may have a Power Automate Free plan. Is this why this is popping up? Will the limit go away if we have a paid account?

Hi @Sakura ,

Sorry to hear your confusion!

Currently the "Run script" action has a quota limit of maximum 200 calls per day per user. At this moment, this quota limit doesn't have a direct link to what type of Power Automate plan you have. Please find more details here: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/office/dev/scripts/testing/platform-limits#power-automate

We are still working on how to best support the kind of situations you have been experiencing. We would love to learn more about your scenarios and expectations to help us provide the best solution for you. Please share your feedback via:

Anyone?

We are a large global organization and management refuses to get a paid plan because I can't give them an answer on volume quota. Moreover, because of this I am being told to just stay away from Power Automate for the time being and look at other solutions.
Of course we are trying to get an answer through other channels as well, but the lack of timely feedback for a simple question on your volume quota is quite honestly a bit troubling.

Do let me know if you need any additional information to formulate an answer.
I need to know what the volume quota are for Run Script (to run Office Excel Scripts).

Can you raise up this limit? It's impossible to work on flows with this limit

Thank you for the clarification.

200 runs a day is indeed quite restrictive and a bit of a disappointment. Without this limit, we'd be able to convert our VBA legacy into full-fledged cloud automations that we can schedule or trigger. This would make it a unique and highly competitive functionality for PowerAutomate.

Knowing the limitation now, we will look at other solutions while the function is still in a test phase, and only use it for infrequent automations meanwhile.

Thank you for the feedback.

@Yutao is there any ability to increase this limit? I see it's currently at 400, but that's still not enough. It's frustrating because this seemed to be the best way to add rows to an Excel sheet in bulk from Power Automate - it was fast an easy to implement.

@seanpaleywll - totally understand your frustration here. At this moment, we're still working on plans and solutions to accommodate different user scenarios and usage patterns and at the same time to efficiently utilize computing resources as much as possible. Thanks for your patience!

Thanks for your patience and support! We have recently bumped up the quota limit to maximum 1600 calls per day per user. Looking forward to seeing more and more exciting solutions built with Power Automate + Office Scripts!

Thank you! This was very much needed. Of course still need to be selective with the projects that use this connector, because a limit is a limit. Looking forward to a pseudo-no-limit someday.

Hi @Yutao

I'm running into the 1600 limitation very quickly while processing purchase orders and validating part numbers. I see your point about cost. But there has to be a way for users to purchase extra credits if necessary. Ideally, regular expressions would be supported out of the box by Power Automate (as an action) instead of relying on Office Scripts.

Do you have any other suggestions on alternatives until MSFT comes out with a solution?

thanks!

For what it's worth, I posted an answer with one possible alternative here: Remove call restriction on Run Script - Power Platform Community (microsoft.com).

Hello...
can i get access for solution limitation run-script? the link is broken

Hi @bobymogot ,

Hmm not sure why that post is broken. I can't open it either. 😞

It's been a while, but I vaguely recall the workaround I provided in that post was to use Azure Functions instead of Office Scripts since the particular scenario described in the post was about some pure JavaScript doing regular expression parsing without any Excel workbook interactions. If you are interested in that route, I can share more details.

However, this solution won't work if your script still needs to access a workbook. If that is the case for you, can you elaborate a little bit on what you are trying to achieve? Maybe we can try some brainstorming here...

@Yutao What constitutes a call? I have a few workbooks that use Office Scripts to unhide and hide columns, delete and add data, send emails (through Power Automate), etc. I have a very hard time believing I'm making 1600 calls a day.

@Anonymous Whenever the "Run script" action is triggered, that is one call counted towards the 1600 limit.

What flow triggers are you using? Also can you double-check all of your flows in case there are some old flows that have kept triggering the scripts?

I inventoried all my Power Automate flows and actions, reduced recurrences, and discovered I'm in a shared environment so, in the interim, they've upped my PowerApps Plan to 2, and all that seems to be helping.
