Unexpected "Cannot find list item" error

Hello,

I am building a flow for an easy task and part of that flow is that, if two conditions are met, it will update the item's Status to "Rejected." I am receiving the following error upon testing for the Update Item action:

{
"status": 404,
"message": "Could not find list item.\r\nclientRequestId: 4a1bef18-3d9e-4260-a264-cb4a0736947b\r\nserviceRequestId: 4a1bef18-3d9e-4260-a264-cb4a0736947b"
}

I verified that the "Update Item" action is referencing the "ID" from the "When an item is created" action, and those ID's match so I am not sure what the problem is here...

when-created.jpg

update-item.jpg

This item is most definitely in the list ("Test User 7", ID # 104)

list.jpg

I've double verified that I am referencing the correct list and checked all my steps again and cannot find the disconnect.

Any help is appreciated!

Thank you,
M

Hi!

Which permission level do you have assigned in this SP list? Read-only? Edit?

Hi!

Can you share a screenshot from your 'Update item' inputs flow design?

Are you assigning an expression to 'Update item' ID input?

Thanx!

Hi @efialttes - thank you for the response! I am not entirely sure what you mean though. Is this what you're looking for?

Here is a screenshot of the flow in it's entirety:

And here are the details of the Update Item action:

Thank you,

Weird...

Where does the 'ID' dynamic content currently assigned as ID input in 'Update item' comes from? Is it the one from your trigger?

Thanx!

@efialttes - Yes, it's from the "When an item is created" trigger action:

Hi @Morghan

Looks like you are using the correct Id mappings but could you check the When an Item created Site Address path is same as Update Site Address.

Thanks

Hi @abm - They are indeed the same addresses. I have copied/pasted from SharePoint to Notepad, blocked out sensitive info but they are identical:

Hi @Morghan

Could you please do a small test for me? Add the update list immediately after the trigger. See what error you are getting? If that works then remove the update action step,  remove and add the old update action step where you were getting the error earlier, add it again and map the id. Please let me know how it goes.

Thanks

Hi @abm -

I just added an Update Item action directly after the trigger and I am seeing the exact same behavior and error ("Could not find list item."). I verified the following:

1.) The ID in the Update Item is the ID of the "When an Item is created"
2.) The URLs in each are identical

Hi @Morghan

Thats strange. Could do another test for me? Add a delay action step for a minute or so then try it. Same test as you did earlier.

1. Trigger

2. Add the delay step

3. Update

Let me know how it goes.

Thanks

Hi @Morghan

Sounds a bit silly. Also make sure the listname of update is same as trigger. I am sure it will. Just want to make sure.

Thanks

@abm - The delay wouldn't progress at all. I had it set by minute per trigger's ID but I let it try to run for 5m before killing it myself. And yes, I verified that the trigger and update item URLs + list locations are the same.

@efialttes - The permissions seem to have been the issue! This test list grants read/edit permissions to the site owners only, which is my mcastorena@xxxxx.com address, but the connection being used for the Update Item was vhub_noreply@xxxxx.com, which did not have any access to this specific list. I updated the connection on the Update Item to use my mcastorena@xxxx.com email address and that seems to have resolved! Very strange and confusing error return from SP though.... They did not make that very intuitive! Thank you all for the help.

Hi @Morghan

Thanks for the update. It would have been nice if the create/update/delete connectors errored in the first place when you created the connection saying that You don't have the permission to update this list.

Thanks

Hurray!
Mistery solved!

I agree with @abm, it seems there is something that should be improved on Power Automate/Sharepoint API side... if an account does not have permissions to access a SP list -not even permissions to read, right?-, trigger should not fire
Glad to see we got a happy ending!

@Morghan @efialttes @abm  I have a similar issue with my power automate flow. Following your chat i changed the permissions for my sharepoint List but I still encounter the same error 'cant find list item'. Can you please help

Hi @rekha97jr

So you have the right permissions to update the list? Try a manual update by opening the record in SharePoint and update it. This way you can confirm whether you have the right access or not.

Thanks

Hi @abm , I figured it out.

But right now I am trying to add a new condition to check if workitem ID exists, only then proceed to next step in the flow. It is failing at 'get workitem details' when i enter a wrong ID.
I also tried adding a condition 'if outputs>0,send an email to user' but it doesn't even proceed till there.

How do i add the condition to check if ID exists , before the 'get workitem details' connector?

Hi. May I know how did you figure your first issue out? I also get this weird error and I have permission to update the list, I checked.
