Update a Value in Apply to Each

Hello Everyone.

I have an array which I am passing to apply to each. Now according to some manipulations the value in the array need to be changed. How this can be done. Giving you a testing data below:

{
"Array":
[
{
"Name":"ABC",
"Address":"Somewhere",

"Status":"Initial Stage"
},
{
"Name":"DEF",
"Address":"Anywhere",

"Status":"Initial Stage"
}
]
}

Now I want to change status of Name = ABC to Passed and Name = DEF to Failed.

So my output array should look like:

{
"Array":
[
{
"Name":"ABC",
"Address":"Somewhere",

"Status":"Passed"
},
{
"Name":"DEF",
"Address":"Anywhere",

"Status":"Failed"
}
]
}

And then I have to Pass it into another array and process it according to status.

Hi there,

I think in this scenario it would be helpful to know in what situations you'd want to modify this. It could be easier to just upload it, filter on a value, and then update from there.

Can you tell us a bit more about a) when something needs to be changed from passed to failed (or vice versa), and, what your end-output looks like? (SharePoint? Word Doc?)

Ok I am passing it to an API inside the apply to each loop, lets say theres one more field called ID in it.

This will go to the API match from there. And if the API is able to successfully run, it will give me status as passed and now I want to update the status in the above array. And if it fails, the status would update to failed.

Now the array looks like:

Inputs:

{
"Array":
[
{

"ID": 1
"Name":"ABC",
"Address":"Somewhere",

"Status":"Intial Stage"
},
{

"ID":2,
"Name":"DEF",
"Address":"Anywhere",

"Status":"Initial Stage"
}
]
}

Output:

{
"Array":
[
{

"ID": 1
"Name":"ABC",
"Address":"Somewhere",

"Status":"Passed"
},
{

"ID":2,
"Name":"DEF",
"Address":"Anywhere",

"Status":"Failed"
}
]
}

Hopefully this is what you're looking for.

Compose has your data:

{
    "Array": [
        {
            "Name": "ABC",
            "Address": "Somewhere",
            "Status": "Initial Stage"
        },
        {
            "Name": "DEF",
            "Address": "Anywhere",
            "Status": "Initial Stage"
        }
    ]
}

Select uses the Array as input and transforms the Status based on the value of Name (ABC = Passed, DEF = Failed). The expressions used are:

//From
outputs('Compose')?['Array']

//Name
item()?['Name']

//Address
item()?['Address']

//Status
if(equals(item()?['Name'], 'ABC'), 'Passed', 'Failed')

grantjenkins_1-1676631937959.png

This would give you the following.

[
  {
    "Name": "ABC",
    "Address": "Somewhere",
    "Status": "Passed"
  },
  {
    "Name": "DEF",
    "Address": "Anywhere",
    "Status": "Failed"
  }
]

grantjenkins_3-1676632198464.png

If you then wanted to add it back into an object with the Array property, you could use the following expression:

json(concat('{"Array": ', body('Select'), '}'))

grantjenkins_2-1676632127724.png

This would give you the following:

{
  "Array": [
    {
      "Name": "ABC",
      "Address": "Somewhere",
      "Status": "Passed"
    },
    {
      "Name": "DEF",
      "Address": "Anywhere",
      "Status": "Failed"
    }
  ]
}

Not exactly, but also I didnt give you all the details. Lets say there are more 100 elements, you have only done above for just ABC.

But nvm, I was able to make a new array and add all the details.

Is it possible to edit the same array we are sending into the apply to each, not make a new array. Like above, you are using select to make a new array. But I want to edit it in the same array. Is it even possible?

No it's impossible.

Welcome to my web site.

Hi - not sure that we can easily update the existing array. Is there a reason why you wouldn't want to use a new array?

Also, did you still need to look at updating the items, or did you say you're already done this?

@VictorIvanidze Oh Ok. 😞

I hope we are able to do that in the future.

@grantjenkins

->Is there a reason why you wouldn't want to use a new array?

So, I am using the updated array in another apply to each loop later in the flow. I had previously developed that apply to each. So, if I make a new array. I would have to make a lot of changes.

So, that was the reason I wanted to update the same array.

->did you still need to look at updating the items, or did you say you're already done this?

Yes, I was able to do the same.

Just one more question, I am currently using append to array. Because of which its making it a 1d array which I require.

And when I use select, I am getting a 2d array. As the select action want its input to be an array. So will this create 2 apply to each loops? or is there a way by which we can remove the 1st array as its not doing much.

See this was the output I was getting after Select:

[

[
{
"Name": "ABC",
"Address": "Somewhere",
"Status": "Passed"
},
{
"Name": "DEF",
"Address": "Anywhere",
"Status": "Failed"
}
]

]

Btw thanks for the select response. 🙂
