Configure Workflows (increment a date by a number of days)

Hello,

I would like to use Workflows for Dataverse since I do not have the Premium Power Automate licence.

But i'm stuck on how to configure it and the documentation is pretty poor to me.

I got two tables :

  • Table "Configuration" with a "Days" integer column
  • Table "Cycles" with two dates columns "Due" and "Done", a "Cycle" integer column and a LookUp column to the "Configuration" table

Now I want a simple behavior which is "when I change the "Done" date (and the Status is Active), create a new record with the following information (and set the previous status to inactive)"

  1. New Due date = Previous Done Date + amount of days equals to Configuration.Days
  2. New Cycle = Previous Cycle + 1

It is easy to achieve the status update and record creation, but I can't figure how to perform simple maths for incrementing integer and dates with dynamic content, even with customs actions.

If someone can help me...

Hi @EtienneV

Workflows do not have the capacity to process measurements or calculations, normally you can use the WF and it allows you to call an Action or a Work Flow Activity where you can perform calculations, but it requires knowledge of .NET

What I don't understand is that if you use Dataverse, you can't use Power Automate, when we use Dataverse it is because we have a Power Apps license, and if we have Power Apps Premium I can use Power Automate within the context of the application

Thanks for your answer!

I manage to do it quickly and easily with the new PowerFX plugins. Unfortunatly I am not sure it is a good idea to use something expertimental...

What you tell me is interesting though: even if the dataverse connector for Power Automate is flagged as "premium", I can use it within my solution? No further licence and surprise later on?

Licenses for the Power Platform are such a mess...

Hi @EtienneV

First of all, I do not recommend using features that are in preview, it may cause problems in the future. It is very interesting what we can do with the plugins but taking it to a PRO solution I don't think is a good idea.

Regarding the Power Automate question, yes you can use it as long as it is in the context of the application and in your case, your trigger will be dataverse so it would be the best option for now, until the plugins MSFT decides to put them in public release

Greetings

Power Automate tells me to have a licence or to get the 7 days trial period...

I read online:

Power Apps licenses (both “Power Apps per app plan” and “Power Apps per user plan”) include Power
Automate use rights for the purpose of automating workflows associated with the Power Apps
application(s).
Power Automate use within Power Apps is limited to the context of the Power Apps application. What this
means is that for both triggers and actions, flows included within a Power Apps application can connect
to:
• Any data source within the use rights of the Power Apps application
• Directly with the Power Apps application (via built in trigger/action)
If the flow is isolated and has nothing to do with the Power Apps application, then standalone Power
Automate licenses will need to be purchased.

But as well :

  • Automated and scheduled flows always run in the context of the flow owner regardless of who starts the flow or what accounts are used for connections inside of the flow. Instant flows (button, hybrid triggers) run in the context of the user who invokes them, regardless of the connections used in the flow. If an automated or scheduled flow uses a premium connector, only the owner needs to have a Premium license.
  • If the flow is in context of Power Apps or Dynamics 365 apps, and is an automated flow, the flow must be associated to the app created using Power Apps or Dynamics 365 app and owner needs Power Apps Premium license, or a Dynamics 365 license.

How can I associate the flow to the App? I already created the flow via the Solution portal...

Or should I use an instant flow with some weird logic?

Hi @EtienneV

When I refer to the context of the application, it means that you use dataverse as a trigger for one of the tables in your solution.

Example you use the trigger when an account is created and you want to send an email, you are in the context of the application because you use dataverse as a connector and then you can execute an action
