Dataverse vs Dataverse for Teams Performance

Hi,

I have a customer who has noticed that a Dataverse for Teams canvas application is running slowly. The canvas app was created within the last three months and I have republished in the last couple of days. They have been testing the application on an iPad using the Teams app.

When I use the application via MS Edge (Chromium) on a desktop computer with a land-line based internet connection, the performance of the application seems very much down to whichever way the wind is blowing; I mean that sometimes it is fast and sometimes it is very slow.

I have read through the usual posts and blogs about best practices for improving the performance of canvas app applications, and where possible I am following the recommendations (or at least I think I am).

My question is, can anyone point me to some MS information that describes the resources that MS make available for Dataverse and Dataverse for Teams applications?

The sort of information I am afters includes:

  • Are the resources shared across the tenancy or are they globally shared between all customers.
  • What are the throttling limits.
  • What sort of performance should we expect.
  • Are full Dataverse environments using the same resources as Dataverse for Teams or do they have better, dedicated resources?
  • Would promoting a Dataverse for Teams environment to a full Dataverse environment increase the applications performance?
  • Is it Teams that is slowing down the application (memory and CPU usage issues) or is it inherent to shared platform resources?

NB. I am not talking about data capacity when I say 'resources', I am talking about things like network bandwidth, servers, IO throughput, CPU and memory.

Many thanks in advance. 😊

Hi @MarkCherry,

From what I know Microsoft has not officially released that info and specifications. Also, from what I've been told by MS there's no performance differences between a Team type and standard (trial/developer/prod/sandbox) type of Dataverse. Infrastructure is supposed to be self-managed by Microsoft and one of the beauties of SaaS or SDaaS (Software Dev as a Service) as we don't necessarily need to worry about those underlying concerns and expect the provider to manage it at a certain extent. The Dataverse database uses Azure SQL which has auto-tuning enabled. To get more info you can always try to contact them but I wouldn't count on it to provide you with those details...

Here are a quick answer to "Are the resources shared across the tenancy or are they globally shared between all customers." --> Both, some capabilities are US only (e.g. some AI functions) shared across and some only within the data centers. Some customers are large enough to have their own dedicated servers/scale groups that are not charged with anyone else.

Hi @EricRegnier,

Thank you for your reply. I half suspected that MS had not released the performance information about the Dataverse and Dataverse for Teams environments. Looking at the SLA was a good idea but all I could find in there was the up-time commitments.

The news from your MS contact that Dataverse for Teams and Dataverse have the same performance is surprising and welcome. It is good of MS to provide the same performance for Dataverse for Teams considering it is a free offer bundled in with the Microsoft/Office 365 subscription.

I have tried raising bugs and questions directly with MS regarding Dataverse for Teams before. Unfortunately most of them (especially the bug reports) came to nothing.

I suspect that our customer's speed issues may be due to poor mobile internet connectivity and/or an under-specked device. They have reported up to two and a half minutes to navigate from one screen to another. I have seen intermittent behaviour like this while developing. It seemed to affect the entire development experience from the initial load of the Power App canvas application through to using Preview to test the functionality. Since it happened after weeks of constant development it felt like the session was being throttled.

I will probably mark your reply as the answer in a couple of days time. I want to see if anyone else has any information on throttling limits.

Regards,

Mark

2 1/2 min is really bad... have you tried lodging a Microsoft support ticket of type performance via the Admin Center (aka.ms/ppac)? It will alert them to investigate and monitor the performance in your environments.

2 1/2 mins is a bit of a shocker. I haven't had the chance to investigate the claim yet (remote working has its advantages but it can make some things much harder). At this point it is just the raw report from our customer. When I tried navigating between the screens using Teams in MS Edge the page transitions were quite fast.

When I have had a chance to gather some more details from the customer and if the issue persists, I will raise that support call.
