Multiple relationships to same table?

Let's say I'm creating a model-driven app for change requests in our environment, that would have two separate subgrids that look up to the Users table. One would be for Stakeholders/Owners, and the other being Affected Users. To accomplish this I've created two separate Many to Many relationships to the Users table.

I'm looking for advice on how to solve the two issues below, or an alternative way to accomplish the above.

First Problem:

Regardless of what I named the relationship, in the Subgrid options when adding it to a form, you just see the name of the table.

notj_0-1620830240743.png

How are you supposed to know which is which?

Second Problem:

When you go to the user record, and then go to the Related tab, you have the same issue but reverse direction.

You have multiple of the same tables. You can't tell if they were added to the Kudos(or anything) as an Owner, requestor, stakeholder, affected user, etc.

Hi @notj,

You can fix #2 within the relationship setup for the Kudos relationship to the IT Projects.   You can change these two to either remove it from showing the relationship with the Display Area field or enter a custom label so you can differentiate the names showing up as well.

Hi @notj ,

First problem: On your subgrid, did you select Show Related Records? I can see the specific column in brackets in my screenshot below. If you don't see this on your end, you can try using the preview maker portal (make.preview.powerapps.com).

ChrisPiasecki_2-1620831572431.png

Alternatively, you can use the Switch to Classic to use the old form designer.

Second problem: You can change the related tab label in the form designer. Example screenshot below:

@ChrisPiasecki For problem 1, there won't be a column name because it's a many to many relationship. I'm under the show related though. You can see the column names in the other connections:

For problem 2, I think you might have misunderstood what I mean. You can't tell which relationship is which in the "related" menu. So if you went to the User record for myself, and wanted to see all the Kudos records where I was an affected user, you have no idea which one to go to. Screenshot to hopefully add some clarity.

@dpoggemann Does that work for you on Many to Many relationships? That field is disabled for me. I just checked a 1 to Many relationship and it's disabled there as well.

Hi @notj

yes, it does.  The relationship needs to be customizable and not a System or Managed one.

See below as example I setup in my environment:

Still not editable on my side for an unmanaged relationships.

Edit: nevermind. Your first screenshot shows "Use Plural Name"  selected, which prevents you from changing the label.

@dpoggemann the related dropdown name doesn't reflect the custom label names.

Edit: It took about 30 minutes but it did eventually change the label in the Related dropdown.

I still have the other problem I'm hoping to resolve, so I don't want to Accept as Solution and mislead. I'll make sure to mark it as one when I move on from the thread though.

Thanks !

Hi @notj

This should fix the other issue as well, it does in my case as it shows the custom label to choose from when adding to the sub-grid.  I see both relationships as different names.
