how difficult is it to implement a Formula Cell?

Like Excel, you can set value of a cell to a calculated value from other cells. Is it possible to implement this with dataverse?

I know dataverse has calculated column already, but if I want something more granular, at record level, is it possible?

where would is start to look into something like this?

PowerFX formulas can support you in that it is similar to Calculated columns on the record level but with the flexibility of a wider range of functions

For Supported PowerFX formulas for Model Driven app please check the below link:

On How to create a power fx formula column in a Model driven app with different types please check the link below:

Excel is a spreadsheet software which has programming capabilities but nowhere close to what Dataverse can do. Dataverse is an enterprise grade SaaS product with huge possibilities which require a proper programming language, so you can do the desired stuff using C# or as other users mentioned using formula column.

Dataverse Formula columns use PowerFX which is similar to excel formulas. It is record-level as well, you cannot reference other records or tables within a formula column so i think it fits your need.

You can create a formula type column and write formula in PowerFx. Power Fx is simple like excel formula

@ivan_appscan you elaborate how a formula column is record level? I want to be able to specify a different formula for per record.

thank you everyone for your suggestions. How realistic do you think it is to use a dataverse plugin to parse and tokenize a text column which contains a math expression, then evaluates its value to a paring result column? Will that work?

plz tell us what exactly you are after.

  1. what's the schema of the table (column datatypes).
  2. what formula you want to apply on which column

@shashankbhidehere's an example schema of what i want to achieve:

Entity: Student

student name (text)

age (number)

gender (choice m/f)

GPA (number)

TestExpression (text, but i want this column to accept a boolean expression, and it evaluates the expression to produces a true or false result. For example, for one record, I might want to test [gender] = 'male', for another record, I might want to test [GPA] > 3.5, or [Age] > 20. Something like that. I do not want a column level formula because I want the owner of the record to be able to specify this expression.)

Of course this is a simplified version of what I want to achieve.Ultimately I want the expression evaluated in a dataverse plugin.

A Dataverse formula column is an expression that gets evaluated for every row. So you can perform math functions or concatenate other columns from that row, but you can't do a Lookup() to find another row's data to bring in. The same formula gets evaluated for every row, so you can't change evaluation per row. You can however create an If statement in the formula so that if there is a certain value in the row, perform X evaluation, otherwise Y evaluation, etc, etc as long as the end-result is the same data type.
