Recently an update was applied (2.37) in PAD and since when I use Launch New Microsoft Edge, I get an error: Failed to assume control of Microsoft Edge (Internal error or communication failure). Yesterday 11/6/2023, I updated PAD to version 2.38 and the issue continues. I am using the most recent version of PAD. Any ideas as to how to resolve the issue?
If I get details of the error it mentions this:
Illegal characters in path.: Microsoft.Flow.RPA.Desktop.Modules.SDK.Extended.Exceptions.InternalActionException: Failed to assume control of Microsoft Edge (Internal error or communication failure). ---> System.ArgumentException: Illegal characters in path.
I can set the browser automation to open any site and will get the same result. I tested with www.google.com and the same occurs.
Thank You
Hi @CooneyRTX ,
This seems to be working (Cause/resolution #2) for most people I have talked to, there are other options as well.
Failed to assume control of Edge or Chrome or Firefox error - Power Automate | Microsoft Learn
Hi @CooneyRTX
Try this approach as alternative as suggested by @Agnius
Hope it helps !

Nived...thanks for the response. If I used this approach how would I proceed with actions such as filling out the web form when the browser control has not been established? Typically you would need the browser instance to do this.
Thanks
Hi @CooneyRTX
If you see the article
You can see that after run application it has opened Google Chrome and after that it uses launch browser action to attach the opened browser and store a browser instance using that browser instance you can do rest of ui automation in browser am I right ?

The workaround does not work. When I Launch new Microsoft End the webpage pops up but the instance does not get added to the flow variables and I still get an error "Failed to assume control of Microsoft Edge". My perfectly working flow just stopped working after a windows update and an Edge update. Power automate desktop version is up-to-date. Have uninstalled and reinstalled the program and the brower extensions. Nothing has worked. Error remains. I'm able to navigate to the website I want to load by doing a new instance, but PAD will not communicate with the browser.

EvaJ123...this is the exact issue I am having. It worked prior to updates and now fails without exception. Hopefully, a fix will be applied soon.
I use other computers that have the same updates and they seem to be working....so I don't know...might have to reinstall windows....Thanks Microsoft!
The troubleshooter simply checks all possible errors and throws them at you. The fact it found issues with your Chrome setup does not mean these are related to your issues with Edge. They just mean you would have problems if you tried using Chrome.
Do you have multiple profiles on Edge?
Yes, I have multiple profiles on Edge...actually...I DID (past tense) have multiple. I went through a whole process of uninstalling edge and removing all profiles and just adding one. Nothing helped.
Multiple profiles seem to not work well anymore. Have you run the troubleshooter after removing the profiles? Is the browser extension now installed and enabled on the one profile you have?
I have the exact issue and recently upgraded to PAD 2.39.306.23341 version, still doesn't work.
Any luck others?
The problem still persists on my side even after updates. I have a case open with Microsoft but no response from them yet.
My issues are finally resolved. Microsoft released this updated trouble shooting guide, and I followed it creating the registry entries it referenced. I also checked which browser extension I had - this impacts the registry keys and names.
