License required popup...but I already have one

When I try to log into Power Automate Desktop, I am met with a popup message that tells me that I need to purchase a per user license with unattended RPA. That is confusing to me because I am already able to create and run UI flows in the Power Automate portal so I have been assuming that I already have that license.

Is it possible that I have a license that provides access to UI flows via the portal but not through Power Automate Desktop?

Hi @jhoolachan

The preview version of Power Automate Desktop (PAD) requires that the user has either a trial or is subscribed to a Power Automate Per user Plan with attended RPA.

If you have one of the above, could you please share a screenshot of the message that you encounter upon signing into the tool?

@PetrosF-MSFT

I don't have the ability to upload images but the message is:

"An active Microsoft Power Automate license is required. Click "ok" to purchase the "Per user plan with attended RPA" license for Microsoft Power Automate. Application with now exit.

Correlation ID: ab9b897b-cf3f-47c0-851b-66923966936a"

As I mentioned, I am able to create and run attended Flows via the Power Automate portal. Do you know how the "Per user plan with attended RPA" shows up at https://portal.office.com/account#subscriptions ? I have the following subscriptions that mention Flow.

Flow for Office365

Flow Free

Flow for Dynamics 365

Flow for Dynamics 365 Customer Voice

Hi @jhoolachan

Since you can create UI flows, then your license should be valid for PAD as well.

Please note that your PAD sign in information is stored into %localappdata%\Microsoft\Winautomation\msalcache.bin3

I suggest you to sign out from PAD, delete the above file and sign in again with the same account that you are using to create UI flows.

I hope the above helps!

@PetrosF-MSFT

The Winautomation folder is empty. Could that part of the problem?

Hi @jhoolachan

The fact that the folder is empty means that you have never sign into PAD. So it is normal and not related to the issue.

Please note that the appropriate license that you need to run PAD is the following:

PetrosF-MSFT_0-1601382298841.png

In case you haven't purchased a plan but you are trialing the product, please let me know what is the exact date that yo started the trial. You could find this from the relevant email that was sent to you.

Thank you!

Hi @PetrosF-MSFT

I definitely don't have that license but also do not have any emails around an attended RPA trial. As far as I can remember, I just started using it and it worked. How long is the trial for?

Is it possible my organization globally opted in to the trial? Should the trial show up in my list of subscriptions?

i have the same problem today i set (purchase) free trial to my account and the same error during sign in...

Below i insert picture of my licence

Hi @PetrosF-MSFT

Either the release of PAD simply coincided with my loss of ability to run UI flows or it caused it but regardless, I am no longer able to run the processes I built. I receive a banner error in the Power Automate portal saying a need an attended RPA license.

It would've been nice to receive some warning that either my trial was ending (assuming I had one though I can't find any emails suggesting I did) or that the service was going to be restricted because I have a month-end process that needs to be run but I'm not sure if I'll be able to purchase a license through my organization by 10/1 to accomplish that.

I was hoping to sign up for a trial but when I click on my the "Try Free" button, it just takes me to the Power Automate portal. Does that mean I already used the trial somehow? Or is it likely due to the fact I'm not a tenant admin? If I had a trial, is it possible to extend it just for a short period?

Hi @jhoolachan If you are unable to extend your RPA trial, go ahead and file a support ticket and we can investigate and look into extending it for you.  Please go to flow.microsoft.com and type CTRL-ALT-A which will open up a page with diagnostic info. Please attach that to the support ticket.

Thanks,

Keith

Thanks Keith. I actually opened a support case (#120092921004195)

yesterday around this issue but we still haven't found a interim solution while an actual license is being procured. I have sent the diagnostic info to the engineer who has been assigned to that ticket.

@PetrosF-MSFT @krkinnan

My Office 365 admin was able to grant me a “Microsoft Power Apps Plan 2 Trial” subscription which allowed me to regain access. Thank you both for your guidance!

Hi @wiredupjax

May I ask if you are still experiencing this issue?

Usually it's getting resolved after some time.

Yes, it is resolved. Thank you for the follow-up.

Thanks for sharing this. I was experiencing the same issue, so it was good to know I just had to wait.

Btw, it took about two hours before Power Automate Desktop recognized the assigned trial licence.

Happy to help out! 🙂
