Hello,
I use Power automate to refresh an excel table that is connected to Power BI every day.
This is via a 'Run Script' prompt that refers to a script containing Workbook.refreshAllDataConnections().
As of wednesday may 10th I receive the below error message:
Office JS error: Line 4: Workbook refreshAllDataConnections: There was an internal error while processing the request. clientRequestId: a7b48e93-4b3b-4db6-93a2-56378d34dd67
-> the script does work within excel (or excel online) itself.
I had priorly had a similar problem as now. This was then resolved, but I think the issue has come back.
Do others have this issue as well?
EDIT:
AS OF MONDAY 15TH MAY I HAVE NO ERROR MESSAGE ANYMORE. HOWEVER THE REFRESH SIMPLY DOESN'T PERFORM A REFRESH. THE SCRIPT DOES WORK FINE WHEN IT IS NOT CALLED FROM POWER AUTOMATE.
Thank you for the help.

Hi. I have indeed seen your post. I am still a little confused about Power BI as a source. Could you develop a little more? For context, I have tried to use Power Automate visual in Power BI to lauch my flow refreshing all queries in an excel, however that doesn't work either. I suppose that's not what you meant by that.
Hi,
I would be also very grateful for some update on that topic. I have the same issue recently:
1) Excel's source is PowerBI dataset
2) Flow in powerautomate is supposed to run excel script with refresh function: Workbook.refreshAllDataConnections()
3) Received error with such message: "We were unable to run the script. Please try again.
Office JS error: Line 3: Workbook refreshAllDataConnections: There was an internal error while processing the request."
I tried to run the same without brackets in the function at the end '()', flow run succesfully but nothing has been refreshed..
Thanks in advance for any other idea on possible reason and solution on that..
After much testing I found that how you create your connection in Excel plays a key role in this.
If you use DAX studio to link an Excel file to Power BI, the dataset will not refresh correctly. To overcome this you use the "Analyze in Excel" option found on your published Power BI report and create the connection that way.
Tip: If you don't want a pivot table, use this method to change the connection from a Cube to a Table
https://community.fabric.microsoft.com/t5/Service/Connect-to-dataset-from-Excel-as-a-TABLE-not-PIVOT...
Hope this works out for some
Thanks retrohead for comment..
Unfortunately for me its not the case. I made connection via 'Analyze in excel' option in powerBI service..
What is even more strange.. I have still running this solution/refresh correctly for another dataset/excel/flow..
When I tried to do exactly the same for other project it's failed 😕
Hi @PawelRRR
Does your dataset have a lot of measures? This failed for me to when things got complicated.
If you do have a lot of measures, try importing the data into another power BI report using analysis services so you have flattened data without any calculations then export to Excel from there instead. This solved my issues but it does take some setting up to get the refresh frequency correct.
No measures at all, just raw data 🙂
I am thinking about recreation this connection from PowerBI to new excel once again.. as I dont have any other idea for time being..
All my flows are failing now with the error message:
sorry to hear you are having issues, @retrohead .
Let me dig into what is going on. Can you share your requestId that you get in the error?
Let me know!
Acknowledged, @retrohead. At first glance, there was an error in your script causing an invalid state on the service side. We are debugging now and will get back to you asap.
I'm in a similar boat. I have excel files linked to a dataset from PowerBI. I'm trying to automatically refresh my files in a similar fashion. The link I've generated was through get data -> from power platform -> from powerbi
Hi @LouMM
I've created new files and ran several tests using different connection methods incase this information helps. I'm receiving the same result for all methods and although I've never managed to get the DAX Studio connection working, the others were working up until recently.
DAXStudio created connection. Result: BadGateway

I hate to be the negative person @LouMM but this is the same cycle we went through months ago, and then the M$ tech ghosted the thread. I would be happy if you find a fix, but it looks like PA will not run a Refesh All in excel. If are really interested in helping, instead of just having the new posters repeat the same troubleshooting, if you can find the time, I would highly suggest you review the threads history of troubleshooting. And look for some gaps that you recognize that the rest of us have missed.
Thank you for your efforts, it is appreciated.
Retrohead - was there a particular set up that worked for you?
This was fixed last week, @retrohead . I would have responded sooner, but I was out ill.
Let me know how things are running over the next day or so.
@gbdawg82 , I would have responded sooner, but I was out ill. (same to retrohead)
Let me know how things are running over the next day or so. This was corrected last week. It looks like there was timeout issued.
Thanks, @TravisCB1 . As I mentioned to others, I would have responded sooner, but I was out ill. Let me know how things are running over the next day or so. Cheers!
So are you saying that "Refresh All" for Excel on power automate should work now?
