Display Rich Text from MS List Multiline Column in Adaptive Card

I have a simple Microsoft List that we are using as an announcement board. Every time a new list item is added, I want the information posted as an adaptive card to a channel in MS Teams. I have been successful in getting the card to post to Teams for all list columns, except for the Rich Text column. The Rich Text column settings are as follows:

I used the Adaptive Cards designer to build the card. When I run the flow, if there is no information in the Rich Text column a card successfully posts to teams. If I add any content (even text) to the Rich Text column in the List then the flow fails.

Is there a way to retain the Rich Text information from a Multiline Column in Microsoft Lists and have it display on an Adaptive Card?

@tm_willis I don't believe you can insert HTML into the adaptive card. You can insert markdown.

This is the rich-text I had in my SP list:

If you want to post rich text, you'll need to use the Post message in a chat or channel action.

@creativeopinion I was able to do as you suggested. The issue now is that when viewing teams in Dark mode, the rich text remains black and therefore cannot be read.

Is there a way to change the background colour of the whole post so the black rich text will always be viewable?

@tm_willis You'll need to wrap the content in a div tag with an inline style to force the background to be white.

Click on this icon to switch to Code View.

creativeopinion_1-1708748508987.png

Replace the paragraph tags with div tags.

creativeopinion_2-1708748523765.png

Add a style to the div tag:

style="background-color: #ffffff"

Customize the css to suite your requirements. If you want to add some padding, you can do that by adding to your inline styles:

style="background-color: #ffffff; padding: 1em"

@creativeopinion I was able to get the light background to work. I haven't had any luck with making the background dark and changing the font of the Rich Text column to a lighter colour. I've been able to change the text of the other columns, but the Rich Text column seems to be stuck on a dark font.

tm_willis_0-1708756897971.png

@tm_willis Apologies if I was unclear in my previous post. You will need to replace the paragraph tag with the div tag and force the background of the rich text to be white. This way it'll work for a light or dark mode. You won't be able to target a specific mode.

@creativeopinion so there's no way to force a black background with white text?

@tm_willis Apparently there is. The output of the html text from my demo is:

<div class="ExternalClassC21CBF23D8AA4E86A28DD136EF6C10B0"><div style="font-family&#58;Calibri, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size&#58;11pt;color&#58;rgb(0, 0, 0);">Some thing really great goes here. This is some bolded text.<p style="text-align&#58;center;"><i>Here is centred text and italicized text.</i></p><p style="text-align&#58;center;"><ul><li style="text-align&#58;left;">This is a bulleted list of things</li><li style="text-align&#58;left;">How cool is this list</li><li style="text-align&#58;left;">Of</li><li style="text-align&#58;left;">things</li></ul></p></div></div>

I just ran a test and you can use an expression with the replace() function to replace all instances where the text colour is set to black:

color&#58;rgb(0, 0, 0)

With:

color&#58;inherit

I inserted another Compose action to hold the expression so I can show the difference between the two. Use the replace() function.

creativeopinion_1-1708795289975.png

The replace() function takes three properties:

replace([string of text], [old text], [text to replace])

Switch to the dynamic content tab and insert the dynamic content of your multi-line rich text column.

creativeopinion_2-1708795390349.png

Add a comma and single quotes. Insert the old string of text you'd like to replace:

color&#58;rgb(0, 0, 0)

creativeopinion_3-1708795435077.png

Add another comma and single quotes. Insert the new string of text you'd like to replace the old string of text with:

color&#58;inherit

creativeopinion_4-1708795499929.png

Run a test. Setting the colour inherit will make the text adopt the parent's color. Seems to work when I tested it.

Hope this helps!

@creativeopinion that looks great, I'll give it a try thank you! Last thing that I'm having issues with is images that are included in the multiple line rich text column do not post to teams.

tm_willis_0-1708812751501.png

Any wizardry able to make the images show up in the Teams post?

@tm_willis Where is your image being stored? On OneDrive, SharePoint, Web?...

@creativeopinion in my testing I was pasting the image directly into the rich text column. Displays correctly in the List.
