Cascading Dropdown Woes!

Hi All,

Newbie here...I've seen a number of threads regarding cascading dropdowns, but unable to see my specific issue replicated, hence the new thread (apologies if i have missed it!)...

I have attached my data set of which i have imported into a SharePoint list.

My 1st dropdown, appears fine using the following:

Sort(Distinct('EMC-Hall-Zone-Operation Mappings',Hall),Result)

Matt_G_1-1646938480683.png

And my 2nd level looks fine using the following:

Distinct(Filter('EMC-Hall-Zone-Operation Mappings', Hall = drp_hall.Selected.Result),ZONE)

Matt_G_2-1646938537588.png

Where my issue is coming is in my 3rd dropdown. From what i can see, using the below, it doesn't appear to take into account the 1st drop down result:

Distinct(Filter('EMC-Hall-Zone-Operation Mappings', ZONE = drp_zone.Selected.Result),Operation)

Matt_G_3-1646938610435.png

I'm wondering if that because for example Zone 1 (2nd dropdown) is referenced in multiple Halls (1st Dropdown), that the Operation dropdown (3rd dropdown) is showing ALL entries in the data source referring to Zone 1 (across all halls!)...

This may sound a bit mental, well, my eyes are stinging...Just hoping it makes sense to someone else!

Many thanks in advance.

To simplify and to reduce the amount of data interactions you have in your app, consider the following:

Set the Items property of your first dropdown control to:

Sort(
    GroupBy('EMC-Hall-Zone-Operation Mappings', "Hall", "_zones"),
    Hall
)

Your Items on the second dropdown to:

Sort(
    GroupBy(drp_hall.Selected._zones, "ZONE", "_operations"),
    ZONE
)

And your Operations dropdown Items set to:

drp_zone.Selected._operations

This will provide you what you are looking for and will keep your app from having to do filters over and over for the controls when they change.

I hope this is helpful for you.

Hey,
you can try the following code.

Distinct(Filter(Table2,Hall=Dropdown1.Selected.Result,ZONE=Dropdown1_1.Selected.Result),Operation).Result

Thanks.

@RandyHayes Firstly, thank you so much for your responses...

All options returned some unhappy red x's sighting 'invalid arguments! For reference, i will show below...

It's pretty late here, and it's been a long day, so apologies if i have assumed or missed anything from your suggestion...

Thanks in advance..

@Matt_G

The formulas appear as what I provided, so there is something that is not correct based on what I inferred from your post.

What is the error you are seeing?  Go into the formula with the red underlines and hover over the red underlines to see what the error message is.

Send an image of the red underlines as well.

Hi @RandyHayes ,

As requested, here are some more images that will hopefully shed some light on where i am at...

Drop Down 1 - Select Hall:

Formula:

Sort(
GroupBy('EMC-Hall-Zone-Operation Mappings', "Hall", "_zones"),
Hall
)

Matt_G_0-1646989775086.png

Matt_G_1-1646989816076.png

Drop Down 2 - Select Zone:

Formula:

Sort(
GroupBy(drp_hall.Selected._zones, "Zone", "_operations"),
Zone
)

Matt_G_2-1646989870221.png

Matt_G_3-1646990016165.png

Again, i'm a newb at this, so understanding the expressions is something i am still working through for education! The only obviously thing i can see from the error, simply by wording is that on both 'errors refer to a column not existing - Both for "Hall" and "Zone" in the formulas respectively. So for reference, i have taken a shot of the SharePoint list (below) that i have connected as a data source. Whilst testing this, i have tried to remove the data source and re-add it again, but no luck.

Matt_G_4-1646990127131.png

When breaking down the above guidance on the 'GroupBy' function, using the Hall dropdown as an example:

Matt_G_5-1646990463233.png

Sort(GroupBy('EMC-Hall-Zone-Operation Mappings', "Hall", "_zones"),Hall)

Broken up:

GroupBy

('EMC-Hall-Zone-Operation Mappings',    <----------Data Source is fine

"Hall",    <---------For some reason it can't find this column_name, or doesn't like it between the quotes? Even though it is listed in the datasource.

"_zones"),   <-------For the group_name - I can only assume this is something created as part of this formula to define the group? as "_zones" isn't used anywhere else in my app or data source.

Hall  <------I am guessing from the hover wording (not above) that this is simply to do with the Sort part of the formula, and will sort based on Hall.

That is where i am up to! Again, thanks so much for your patience! Any other info needed, just let me know!

@Matt_G

So my guess is that you renamed the Title column to be Hall.

Realize that the column names actually never change when you rename them - so it is still a Title column.

If that is the case, then change the formula to the following:

Sort(
    GroupBy('EMC-Hall-Zone-Operation Mappings', "Title", "_zones"),
    Title
)

That would be the primary error - all the others are just due to that one.

So make that change and if no joy, let's dig further.

In the words of Jon Bon Jovi...."woooow we're half way there....."

So, that surely did get shut of the 1st drop-down error - What a great catch, i would have never have thought of that!

Onto the 2nd drop-down - The error is below, is referring to something similar, but now with the ZONE value...

Matt_G_0-1647013208309.png

List Settings for your reference...:

Matt_G_1-1647013249013.png

@Matt_G

What is the real name of the ZONE column?  That is what you will need to put in there.

To determine a column's real name, you can click on the column in the List Settings of your list and then in the address bar of your browser, look at the end of the URL - it will show the real name.

You are surely smashing these one step at a time! It is very much appreciated...."field_1" ...How very original!

So we are shut of the 2nd drop down error now and we return the list:

Just the final hurdle - The last drop down doesn't return any data, nor errors!
