How do I auto-select the first item in a gallery?

This post is tangentially related to this one I made the other day.

Essentially, someone gave me a fix which I have worked with to make sure that reference numbers are never doubled up on, however, this fix relies on a gallery (TicketsArchiveGallery) to have the first item 'selected'. This gallery however is 'hidden' on a page of the app the user should never see - it's just there to help me reference the ID number for the new reference number, this means that where my reference number is worked out using the following formula:

If(TicketsArchiveGallery.Selected.IDStatic >= varID, TicketsArchiveGallery.Selected.IDStatic + 1, varID)

If I have not 'Selected' record in the gallery it still doubles up reference numbers in certain situations.

My gallery is filtered so it's descending by the IDStatic number:

SortByColumns('Tickets Archive', "IDStatic", Descending)

Is there any way to 'Select.Parent' of the top item in a gallery when another screen is OnVisible (or the app on-start, even)? Is there a better solution to this?

Thanks!

Using the advice above, use lookup on your default property. Create a variable OnVisible (Use Set or UpdateContext). e.g.

UpdateContext({recordToSelect: Lookup(datasourcename, ID = 15)})

where 15 is the record ID of the record you want selected when the gallery loads. If you store the ID in a variable, then replace 15 with yourvariablename. e.g.

UpdateContext({recordToSelect: Lookup(datasourcename, ID = yourvariablename)})

Set the gallery's default property to your OnVisible variable name (e.g. recordToSelect). When the gallery loads, it will select that record first. Please note that you don't have to use ID. You can use any unique identifier from the data source for your record.

On your gallery's OnSelect property,  in the first line, change your OnVisible variable name value to CurrentItem. e.g.

UpdateContext({recordToSelect: CurrentItem})

This will ensure that subsequent records that are selected will display the details for the current item.

Please note that I am using the new Preview of PowerApps (make.preview.powerapps.com), which handles galleries much better.

Hi @Anonymous, make sure the OnSelect property of all the controls in your gallery are set to Select(Parent). If some aren't then they won't reset the default properly. Hopefully this is what's causing the problem. If not, let me know and I can help troubleshoot further.

I found just setting the gallery Default value as First(GalleryDataSource) ensures that the first item is always selected in the gallery i.e.

First(SortByColumns('Tickets Archive', "IDStatic", Descending))

When I do this, the app won't allow me to select any other items in the gallery. Any thoughts?

I followed @RandyHayes  advice, but also found that although the first row was selected, I couldn't select another row. I'm sure this has worked previously so Microsoft must have changed some behaviour somewhere.

I have 4 galleries on one screen and I don't want to write individual code for each so that it simply default selects  the first row. The solution that works for me is setting the Default of any gallery to:

{ID: First(Self.AllItems).ID}

This assumes there is a field in your table named 'ID'. If you don't have one, use another unique number and just both "ID" value above to your field name.

I was able to get this working by using the following documentation: Select function in Power Apps - Power Platform | Microsoft Learn

In OnVisible(), call Select(MyGallery, 1). This will set your gallery to the first record as well as call the OnSelect of the gallery.

Great! After several days trying to solve a similar problem, that simple line was the solution. Great help.

Here's a simpler way: In the Items property of a gallery, filter the table using a boolean variable as its condition like Filter(mytable, var_truefalse)

Now, add the below code to the OnVisible property of the screen:

UpdateContext({var_truefalse:true});

The above line will set the var to true resulting in no impact to the gallery filtering when the screen is rendered.

Now, wherever you filter the gallery, like using tabs or even search, just set the var_truefalse to false and in next line set it to true like below:

UpdateContext({var_truefalse:false});

UpdateContext({var_truefalse:true});

If your gallery is filtering with search TextInput then in the OnChange, add the above 2 lines. If filtering using tabs, add that to its code trigger property.

The best part is that you can add all the filter criterion in the code, just add a boolean variable to it to make this work. Below is my code:

Search(Filter(MSAVC_Archetypes,ARCTYP_DOMAIN_ID.DOMAIN_ID=Domain_ChangeLog_TAB.Selected.DOMAIN_ID And var_truefalse),ArctypFilter_ChangeLog_TI.Text, "pac_arctyp_fullname_fx")

Here's the screenshot of my app with code added to the search textinput's OnChange property. My variable name below is uc_refresh_GAL:

Let me know if anyone has questions.

@RandyHayes I'm doing this, however, whenever I want to select another record, it pops back to the first one.  Do you have any advice?
