OnStart vs OnVisible

Hey guys, I need your help with something.

I've made an app with a few buttons to Display/Hide a Gallery and a couple of Forms.

When I open the App on my phone basically both screens are hidden and I need to press the 2 toggle buttons to show them

So default (when opening the app) the visibility is set to false (I guess)

In the OnVisible property of the Home screen I've entered this formula (amongst others)

Set(varShowDrillingdetails;true);;
Set(varShowList;true)

In the OnStart property of my APP I've set the formula

Set(varShowDrillingdetails;true);;
Set(varShowList;true)

What am I doing wrong ?

Hi @RvdHeijden ,
I think it is more convenient to have the formula on the OnStart property.
And also it depends on what you want to achieve.

Hi @RvdHeijden ,

Please try to set the below in App OnStart property so it gets execute for the first time when app gets loaded.

Set(varShowDrillingdetails;false);;
Set(varShowList;false)

Set these variables varShowDrillingdetails and varShowList in visible property of gallery and forms. So when app loads, visible property is false, so it's hidden

Then on toggle button, update the context of the variable to true.

UpdateContext( { VarShowlist: true } )

Use UpdateContext when you want variables scoped to a screen and use Set function to use variables across screens.

Thanks.

Unfortunately that doesn't change anything, when I use the app the default setting remains that both screens are hidden but I want them to be visible.

I've deleted the formulas in de OnVisible property and now they are just in the OnStart property of the APP (I've already tried switching it from False to True but in both instances nothing changes and both the Form and Gallery are hidden

Eventhough the formula is in the same screen I've also tried to switch the UpdateContext to Set but that also didn't work

Hi @RvdHeijden ,

If you are testing the app in preview mode, make sure to run the App.Onstart once to set the variables.

Additionally, are the forms and a gallery on the same screen as the one where UpdateContext is being run? If not, use Set instead of UpdateContext since updated variables are only valid for that screen.

@Ashwin7104 thanks for your reply

All forms and Galleries are on the same screen as the UpdateContext formula and I've run the OnStart more then a couple of times so I'm stumped as to what the problem is because it looks like everything should run perfectly but it doesn't.

On the page Home there are NO formulas in the OnHidden and OnVisible

On the APP in OnStart these formulas are present

Set(varShowBoringDetails;false);;
Set(varShowList;false)

Ive already tried to change this from false to true because I want both the Gallery and the Form to show when I open the app but on both instances both remain hidden, no matter what I change

Hey @RvdHeijden ,

Would you mind sharing the picture of the gallery's and forms' visible property ? I hope the property's variables are set appropriately.

Thanks.

@Ashwin7104 I don't mind at all,
the Gallery Visible property is set to varShowList=true
the container in which the form is hidden is set to varShowBoringDeteails=true

Hi @RvdHeijden ,

Interesting. Let's attempt some troubleshooting to determine the cause.

1) Run App OnStart once in PowerApps Studio. Verify that varShowList and varShowBoringDetails are set to false in the File -> Variables section under Global variables.

Ashwin7104_0-1656473621315.png

2) After that, select the toggle button and check both variables once more in the File -> variables area of the appropriate screen (in my case its screen 13). Its now set to true.

Ashwin7104_1-1656473746552.png

3) Next, make sure the variables still return true by checking the visible formula attribute of the Gallery or form on the same screen. You don't need to compare with another boolean because the variables already return boolean.

Gallery.Visible = varShowList

Post your troubleshooting steps, let us know the results.

@Ashwin7104

Here are the steps I've followed and I already see a difference between them but just not sure on how to fix it.

1. Both variable are set to false

2. The 2 variables should have true with them but now it states No Value, even though I've run OnStart

2022-06-29_08-44-41.png

3. Probably as a result of step 2 this doesn't show varShowList = true, but now it shows true=true
